January -

Shawna Lamb

January is always an interesting time of year at Boze’s, as many folks attempt to start a new exercise and eating plan. Not so for our January Member of the Month – as Shawna decided many months ago that she wanted to “go in a new direction”. Shawna re-formatted her training program in the fall - and hasn’t looked back since.

Shawna had been a Boze’s member before - and for a time also had memberships at the two other facilities in Dauphin. She came back to Boze’s to participate in our 60 Days to a New You © Program - and has since purchased a couple’s membership with her husband Perry (also a former member of the month and long-time Boze’s alum).

Shawna took the 60 Day program seriously, and saw some great results. She toned up, lost some weight, but most importantly put on muscle - which she knows will help burn extra calories as she continues with her training program. Shawna knows that there are ups and downs with training, but her new found focus and energy are helping her keep on track.

It also doesn’t hurt to have a supportive partner at her side. Although Shawna and Perry have varying schedules they try to work out together whenever possible. Shawna certainly knows her way around the gym, and continues to “tweak” her program as she goes along.

The holiday season put a bit of a crimp in her schedule, as did some business related traveling, however Shawna has been able to get in a few workouts here and there and looks forward to the regularity of the post-holiday season.

Shawna mixes resistance training and cardio into her workouts. She knows she has to continue to add muscle - and fully understands the benefits related to the different training she is doing. She works out at least 4-5 times per week - and is aiming to stay regular in the new year.

Shawna Lamb, our January 2010 Member of the Month.

February -

Bill Brychka

Bill has been a Boze’s member for a couple of years – but only since he retired from the NHL (Noon Hour Hockey League) at the beginning of last year. The thing that’s so amazing about this is that Bill retired from regular hockey after he turned 80! He decided that he needed to keep active so he joined Boze’s.

Bill is the best example of what happens to someone when they look after themself. Bill is always on the go - he rides his bike when he can during mild weather, is always in his yard doing yardwork - winter and summer - and drives only when necessary.

Bill stays active by working out regularly - in particular with weights - but also focuses on his core strength - so that he can keep his arms and legs strong for baseball...yes, he still plays competitive slo-pitch. Of course he’s also in great cardio shape - but who wouldn’t be if they did what Bill does.

Bill is a marvel, as he also makes great homemade wine and has other hobbies too numerous to mention in this article. He’s an “Ever-ready Bunny” type of personality...and stays young by contstantly being on the move.

Bill Brychka, a marvelous example of what exercise can do for you...is our Member of the Month for February, 2010.

March -

Doug McCorvie

Doug has been a Boze’s member for a long, long time. He’s actually one of our members who remembers the old location on Main Street. Doug has been off and on as a member since the 1990's - but has been much more ON during the past couple of years.

Boze has known Doug since high school - they were football teammates - and reminisces from time to time about “the good old days”. Although they are “a little greyer” they still discuss sports whenever the chance comes up.

Doug has combined resistance training and weights regularly during his workouts. From time to time he focuses more on one or the other - but getting in and working out on a regular basis is his goal.

Doug has joined the new age - as he now wears ear buds when he does his cardio. He likes the climber - but also spends considerable time on the treadmills and bikes.

When Doug is at work he sometimes get to use the strength and endurance that Boze’s workouts have provided. As a Maintenance Crew member for CN Doug’s job keeps him on the road from time to time - so his workouts are very important when he’s spending more time at home.

Doug McCorvie, Boze’s member of the month for March, 2010

April -

Hector Paulhus

Hector Paulhus is our April 2010 member of the month. When first notified Hector commented “is this an April Fools joke?” but we aren’t kidding around when we selected Hector.

Hector has been the most consistent member from CKDM – and has worked out fairly continuously since Boze’s and CKDM put a membership arrangement in place over 10 years ago. Hector usually works out in the late afternoons – but has been known to come in a bit earlier and also on the odd weekend or holiday. He’s generally at the station most days – but his job keeps him moving around when he’s on location or working special events.

Hector is a cardio fiend, and is known to spend literally hours pounding away on the stairclimber. He routinely takes a magazine (or three), the reading rack and a towel and heads to his favourite piece of cardio equipment. If Hector’s in the gym, we usually know where to find him.

Although Hector and Boze don’t exactly see eye to eye on favourite sports teams they do carry on some friendly banter regarding the Riders and the Bombers. Since the Riders have had the upper hand the past few years Hector has needed to say less (and smile a lot more) as Boze rants on about the Big Blue. Hector is a member of Rider Nation – and as long as they are winning he just keeps smiling…

Boze’s has been sending its newsletter to CKDM for several years – and Hector has always been on the receiving end looking after our radio needs. It’s a pleasure to send the latest edition with Hector as the April 2010 Member of the Month.

May -

Shirley and Vaden Budden

If you come to Boze’s during a weekday morning chances are you are going to see Shirley and Vaden Budden.

Shirley and Vaden started their membership at the gym in August 2009.

Shirley and Vaden are a quiet couple but will be quick to give you a friendly smile.

Their consistent routine is cardio, weights and then into the aerobics room. At times you will see Vaden sitting by the water fountain (to have a rest and or chat) or at the front waiting patiently for Shirley to finish.

Shirley and Vaden Budden are deserving of the tilte of May’s Members of the Month.

June -

Mary and Nick Hudyma

Nick and Mary Hudyma have collectively been Boze’s members for several years. Mary was a member for awhile before Nick decided to join - but if you know anything about Nick you’ll appreciate that he rarely misses out on a good thing!

Nick and Mary have a set workout routine, getting to Boze’s regularly at least three times per week. They often work out together - generally earlier in the day than later. From time to time Nick will arrive at Boze’s solo as Mary is quite involved in volunteer work in the community.

Their workouts are tailored to their specific individual needs, although both start with cardio work. They sometimes participate in moderate resistance
training, but more often than not they
spend most of their time on the cardio equipment.

Nick and Mary are positive role models for a very active grown-up family. Son Steven and wife Cory are Boze’s members; and daughter Tanya (Love) works part-time at Boze’s.

Congrats to Nick and Mary Hudyma, active retired folks who take care of themselves - Boze’s members of the month for June

July - Frances Stewart

Frances has been a Boze’s member a couple of different times over the past several years - and currently is working out at the gym at least three times a week. In addition to her workouts Frances also has been participating in our noon classes, specifically to get additional exercise ideas to add to her core workout routine.

Frances has been very successful in losing a significant amount of weight during the past couple of months, and attributes her success to regular exercise and healthy eating. She has maintained a regular workout schedule - and has been diligent in modifying her exercise routine as she becomes familiar with the movements. Frances understands the training principle of variation and has applied it very successfully to her workouts.

Frances, like many of us, has a wonky back and gimpy knee - old injuries that from time to time limit her mobility. These injuries used to bother her more than they do now, and Frances attributes her better physical condition as the reason she is not nearly as bothered by her old injuries.

Frances has another workout habit that helps her stick to her program - she keeps an exercise journal. Frances plans out her workouts and records her activity - which allows her to accurately increase her overload when she’s ready for a change.

Frances seems to have it all together when it comes to her workouts, and she is a deserving Boze’s Member of the Month.
