Members of the Month 2009 February - Sonia Doroshenko and Mark Symchych
|
2009 Darren Carlson Darren Carlson January is always an interesting time of year at Boze’s, as many folks attempt to start a new exercise and eating plan. Not so for our January Member of the Month – as Darren Carlson decided many months ago that he wanted to “go in a new direction” and as a result completely re-formatted his training program. Darren has been a Boze’s member since 2003, and could be described as a typical “middle-aged” guy working out to “stay in shape”. He has a sedentary type of job and found that working out was necessary to keep him healthy. He did a mix of cardio and weight training, and although his workout schedule was providing him with some benefits he wasn’t getting all the effects he was looking for. Namely, he was not as lean as he wanted to be, and found that as he was getting older it was becoming more and more difficult to avoid being a bit soft “around the edges”. At first Darren thought that training a bit harder would do, so he ramped up his workouts and starting lifting from time to time with Craig McKinnon. Darren joked that Craig had to work hard to keep up to him – but in fact they seemed to provide each other with the type of motivation necessary for both of them to benefit. As Darren’s training intensified so did his intentions to eat more health consciously. He started to monitor his intake of foods and made adjustments to maximize training benefits. Darren realized that his slow but steady weight gain over the years wasn’t entirely related to his activity level and knew that eating better was a top priority. As his training program became more focused, and his better eating habits kicked in new goals began to emerge. Darren got his body-fat tested and used the results to establish a baseline for further progress. He looked at the calendar and created a year-long training program that targets fat loss and muscle gain. He’s well on his way to reaching his new goals and credits his new-found focus for most of his success. Darren has a plan and sticks to it. He decided what he wanted and gathered information to help design a reasonable, achievable program. He lifts heavy, but smart – and practices great lifting technique. He sticks to a routine, and although for some that might sound boring it hasn’t been for Darren. When you’ve got a clearly defined goal all the work just falls into place. Darren Carlson, our deserving first member of the month for January 2009. Sonia Doroshenko and Mark Symchych February 2009 is the 9th anniversary of our Member of the Month program - and one of our MoM’s for February is soon to be one - Sonia Doroshenko. Sonia and her husband Mark Symchych are expecting. Sonia and Mark have usually been early-morning members, but over the many years that they’ve been at Boze’s they have worked out both before, between and after work. It seems they now prefer working out before work - with Sonia attending Training Camp classes while Mark hits the weights. Sonia has participated in both the early and the really early classes – and has done several other forms of training over the years. She also knows her way around the weight room, and is (was?) also a fairly serious runner. (Sonia has been known to do lots of outdoor early morning running). Mark, on the other hand has had to deal with gimpy knees (thanks to a past filled with Ukrainian dancing and rugby) but that hasn’t necessarily slowed him down from staying active. Sonia and Mark lead an active lifestyle and enjoy spending their spare time participating in many outdoor activities. As their life will soon be considerably more complicated they are a fitting Valentine version of our Member(s) of the Month for February. Duane McMaster Duane has been a member since March of last year, but in that time has truly become one of Boze’s regulars. Duane joined through a promotion with Allard, Yakubchak Letain and most recently renewed a Couple’s membership with his wife Carmen. Although they barely (if ever) workout together (kind of hard to do with a young family at home) they have really become familiar faces around the gym. Duane has a unique skill that I need to share - he can run and read at the same time! I know many of our members walk and read; or cycle and read; or even use the elliptical and/or stairmaster and read - but Duane runs! Even more amazing is his ability to wipe away sweat, turn the page and even adjust his glasses - all without falling off the treadmill. Amazing? In fairness to Duane he’s been a great new addition to our group. He works out regularly early in the morning (that’s a special skill all to itself) and supplements his training on other days by hitting the gym at noon. With small kids at home he says that’s the best time to get here - as he likes to spend as much time as possible with his family. As tax season approaches its very likely that work will get much more stressful for Duane, but his regular workouts provide him with the outlet to manage that stress. He runs regularly, and also does a strength training routine that hits all the major muscle groups. He works out efficiently and usually hits the showers thoroughly in need of one (he tends to sweat like I do!). Duane McMaster - our truly deserving member of the month for March. Ken and Aaron Smaluck Ken has been a member “on and off” several times during the past 15 or so years - and his son Aaron has been a regular member for several years as well. In the past they had individual memberships and most recently have been working out together - it’s been easier for Ken to get to Boze’s this past year as he’s finally retired from a career of teaching high school in Dauphin. Ken keeps himself in great shape - as he also plays racquet sports and is a member of the NHHL (Noon Hour Hockey League). Ken is likely one of the fittest players in the NHHL - and routinely skates circles around many of the other players (I know all about that - I’m sometimes one of the “pylons” he goes around). Aaron is a “chip off the old block” as he has a similar body type to his dad. He’s lean and strong and works out hard when he’s in the gym. He can seemingly do chin-ups for as long as he wants to - and usually has the treadmill cranked up when he’s doing cardio. Although he’s retired Ken certainly keeps himself busy. Between hockey, squash, badminton (playing and coaching) and substitute teaching he still finds time to hit the gym regularly with Aaron. They mix working out with free weights and machines - and Aaron usually does more cardio at Boze’s than Ken. Ken and Aaron Smaluck - our Father and Son Member of the Month team for April, 2009. Roby Baron Roby Baron has the distinction of being our youngest member of the month – but his age doesn’t in any way diminish his accomplishments. Roby is a hard worker in the gym, and would be the first to attest to the benefits he’s gained from working out regularly. Roby started with Boze’s about a year ago, wondering at that time whether or not working out with weights was something that would interest him. Roby favours individual sports, like Tae kwon do, which he’s participated in for several years but hadn’t previously done any weight training. Well, it didn’t take Roby long before he was hooked on Boze’s. He has an affinity for working out – and has shown steady progress and gains in both strength and endurance. Roby has A couple of months ago Roby re-vamped his program and continues to modify his training as time goes along. He routinely asks intelligent questions about his regime and has some of the best technique in the gym. Roby has a remarkable level of maturity for a student and is a very deserving Member of the Month. George Allard George has been a regular member of Boze’s for several years. He has had a regular membership, a couple’s membership, a corporate membership...you name it and George has probably experienced it over his many years at Boze’s. George is one of our noon hour regulars - attending most days (except Thursday when he’s working from Onanole). Even when he plays Noon Hour Hockey during the winter he tries as best as he can to make it in to Boze’s a couple of times a week. Because George lives near Clear Lake he finds that noon hour provides him the most convenient time to exercise. He finds that a lunch time workout helps break up his day - and helps to energize him for the afternoon. In his workout George combines cardio exercise, primarily on the elliptical with weight training. He has a “wonky” knee and finds that he has to be careful with what he does in order that he not further injure the joint. In addition to working out George tries to include as much outdoor physical activity as he can. In the winter he’s an avid cross country skier, and during the summer he likes to hike and sail. During tax season, when George is busier than usual he finds working out relieves stress and tension. On several occasions George has stated that working out regularly helps him make it through tax time. George Allard, our June member of the month who has “figured it all out!”. Brad Carefoot Brad Carefoot has been a Boze’s member for many years. In fact, all of his kids and his wife Chris have had some type of connection to Boze’s. Son Clayton used to work for Boze’s, Mitch used to work out as a member of the Kings, Chris attended some of our Training Camp classes and Tyler is a current member. That’s quite a family history. Brad has been the family constant through the years at Boze’s. He’s usually a regular noon hour member who periodically will also come in after work or on the weekend. However, he is probably most noticeable by his habit of reading while he works out. Brad rarely participates in a workout without his glasses and a good book! Usually a novel of some kind – ask him what he’s ready now!) His routine is pretty routine in that he regularly spends at least a couple of chapters doing cardio – works up a good sweat and then hits the weight room for a quick upper body workout. Brad tends to favour either the recumbent bike or treadmill (I guess the book racks are best on these machines!) and usually works up quite a sweaty lather. He sometimes has to put his glasses down for the tail end of workouts that include a run – but regardless of the equipment he’s using there is usually a good book somewhere close by. Brad is quite an accomplished athlete and is a regular NHHL’er during the winter season. He mixes Boze’s workouts with hockey during the winter – and finds that staying active tends to help his back. He has experienced some back wonkiness during the last couple of years and finds that some exercise is always better than none. Brad Carefoot – our member of the month for July – setting the example for an active family. Darren Russell It might appear that there is a NHHL trend running amok at Boze’s - as Darren Russell is another in a long line of Noon Hour Hockey League players who is being recognized as a Boze’s member of the month. Darren follows closely on the heels of NHHL players Brad Carefoot, George Allard, and Ken Smaluck who are 2009 inductees - and other members/NHHL players (Rob McDill, Eric Irwin, Lyle Stokotelny and Dennis Stykalo) who are Members of the Month from years gone past. The boys in the dressing room might consider it an elite club - but the one thing these “boys” all have in common is an interest in staying active and healthy. Darren is no exception. He’s a “gifted” skater who has really noticed the changes regular workouts at the gym provide. This is the second “off-season” that Darren has worked out at the gym, and this year he vows to stick with the workouts after the hockey Darren works up a pretty good sweat by mixing cardio and weights during his regular noon hour workouts. His busy season is the spring and summer so he sometimes flexes the workout time he gets - but when he’s regular he says he certainly notices the difference. Darren tweaked his back a while ago and has been somewhat slowed by the injury. He says he was doing a George Allard workout when the injury occurred, but Darren is also an avid golfer (what hockey player isn’t?) So we aren’t quite sure where he might have been nicked up. Darren has a grown family who are also athletically gifted (He says the girls get it “from their mom”) and he is very involved in community activities - currently serving as president of the Dauphin Kings board of directors. Darren Russell is our very deserving Member of the Month for August, 2009. Tamara Rossin Tamara (Tam) Rossin is no stranger to Boze’s. She’s been a consistent member since 2006 (she also tried us out before that) and usually works out 3-4 times per week during the noon hour. Tam works across the street in the same office as David - so she often gets the call “are you coming to class today” when he is leaving at noon. Tam is a regular Noon class participant - and puts up with David whenever he’s instructing. In addition to attending classes on Mondays and Wednesdays - Tam doesn’t work on Fridays - Tam also uses the cardio equipment on a regular basis. More often than not she can be found with a good book while she’s riding the recumbent bike. Tam works up a pretty good sweat when she’s at Boze’s and uses her workouts to complement an active lifestyle. Tam used to be a very competitive badminton player - and continues to be active by walking and maintaining a large yard and garden. You wouldn’t know it by looking at her, but Tam has three grown sons. She says that being active and working out keeps her feeling healthy - and has helped her recover quickly from some minor surgeries during the past year. Coming to Boze’s is just another part of staying active and healthy for our September Member of the Month, Tamara Rossin. Jim Nightingale Jim has been a Boze’s member for a couple of years and has alternated between early morning and late afternoon/evening workouts - depending on where his job is taking him. Jim works on rail maintenance for CN, which keeps him “on the move”. He’s often times away from Dauphin for extended periods of time - so when he gets a chance to work out he usually takes it. Jim is very comfortable in the gym combining cardio and resistance training into his workouts. Considering the physical nature of his work Jim hits the weights pretty seriously - and usually leaves a lot of “humidity” in the gym. Jim is consistent with his workouts and uses a combination of free weights and machines during his training. Jim is serious about training - but can also be counted on for a quick laugh or funny comment whenever he’s in the gym. Jim also makes a point of hitting the candy basket when he leaves - and often will be rooting around for his favorite treat. Jim Nightingale, Boze’s Member of the Month for October. Marion Pernarowski Marion has been an on-again, off-again member - who is “on again” since we’ve started our early morning Training Camp classes. Marion is a regular in our 6:45 am class - usually in her back corner position, keeping our instructors true to their repetition counts. Marion first joined Boze’s when we were still on Main Street - and has held a variety of memberships - including a Couples and Family membership with her husband Mike and oldest children Katie and Jordy. Over the last 20 or so years Marion has participated in a variety of classes, worked out with weights in the gym and - for awhile - was a relatively committed runner. Lately Marion seems to enjoy the early morning classes - mostly for the “convenience” of working out before work. She generally rushes in just before the class gets started - and on many days has to hurry off to work. However she routinely has a chance to take her time getting ready for work and can be known to spend a considerable amount of time chatting with other members before she makes her way out the door. Marion has a good time during the morning classes - and regularly encourages others with her funny comments and on-time counting. She’s a friendly face and a fun presence whenever she’s in class. Marion Pernarowski - our member of the month for November 2009. Don Kowal Don has been with Boze’s for a couple of years - but has become very consistent during the past year or so. Don is a heavy equipment operator - and from watching his workouts you might say that he moves some heavy equipment around Boze’s as well. Don has been around weights for many years. You can tell just by watching his workouts that he knows his way around a weight room. His lifting technique and mechanics are excellent and he certainly understands what exercises are necessary to achieve success. Don doesn’t say much while he’s in the gym, and generally slips in and out without much fanfare. His training routine has focused on strength development recently, but Don spent considerable time doing cardio this past summer in an effort to shed some additional weight. Don stated that he needed the extra cardio to offset his newfound taste buds (Don quit smoking and added a few lbs) and found the extra effort paid off. Combining cardio with his regular weight training - and a new found appreciation for “clean eating” has Don feeling trim and looking trim. Don Kowal. Boze’s December 2009 member of the month.
