Members of the Month 2008 June - Shelly Baxter Felton
|
2008 Myles Haverluck Last month his wife Bonnie held the mantle, and this month it’s Myles’s turn to be our Member of the Month. Myles has been a Boze’s member “on and off” for over 10 years - both here and in our old location on Main. Myles is a morning person and generally exercises before much of the day’s work is started. He’s noted on several occasions that “if I don’t get here in the morning I’m probably not going to make it”. Myles is a very busy fellow - both in his professional and private life. In addition to a hectic work schedule he’s involved in numerous local organizations and recently became a grandparent for the first time. Myles notes that fitting in exercise is sometimes a challenging task - with all the meetings and travelling he does - but that getting a program established and working out with a trainer has helped him stick to his workout goals. He’s usually in the gym at least three times a week, and complements his gym workouts with walking, cycling and other outdoor pursuits whenever he can. Myles incorporates both cardiovascular and resistance training into a workout program that has helped him attain and maintain a healthy weight. Over the years he’s tried different styles of exercise programs - each providing certain amounts of success. However, his biggest challenge is finding enough time to exercise regularly. Travelling generally puts the biggest wrinkle into his training - however this past year he’s been able to quickly get back into a training groove with the help of Boze’s trainer Christine Letain. Christine has been able to help Myles keep his workouts on track by adjusting them to suit his schedule. Arlene Chaychuk Arlene has been a Boze’s member for a couple of years. As an MGEU member (she works across the road in the provincial building) she finds that coming to the gym provides a great balance between work and other daily lifestyle stressors. Since before Christmas Arlene has embarked on a more rigorous training routine - and although there have been some “ups and downs” she finds the increase in physical activity has helped her deal with life’s various stressors. Arlene has a bit of a “wonky” knee and has had to adjust her training to deal with the limited mobility it affords her. She finds the recumbent bike gives her a great workout - and when combined with an upper body program of cable machines and dumbbells she’s pretty much beat when she leaves the gym. Arlene is a former northerner and loves to travel. She usually has something to read when she heads to the bike and always has a smile on her face. Arlene Chaychuk – Boze’s February 2008 Member of the Month. Shannon St. Goddard Shannon has been a member of Boze’s for several years - although she first joined in 1997 - as a student. She recently renewed for another year and finds that participating in both cardio and resistance training has been most beneficial to her overall health. Shannon has recently ramped up her training intensity – even though she previously had maintained a fairly regular workout schedule. She makes it to the gym at least three times per week but found that she needed a “bit more” to help her achieve her training goals. She’s tried several different workout formats and has recently included Boot Camp classes to her training. She finds the tempo variations included in classes add variety to her cardio workouts. Shannon is no slouch when it comes to resistance training either. She works hard when she’s in the gym and notes the extra intensity has been beneficial. She combines free weights with some variable resistance machines to hit all the major muscle groups. She routinely follows up cardio training with resistance work – and motivates herself by listening to personal tunes on her MP3 player. Karen Yuriy Karen has been a member of Boze’s for a couple of years (she’s taken some time off in between to add to her family)...and has recently become very regular in her training at the gym. She worked out before - attending classes and doing her own workouts in the gym and cardio area, but finds the new classes to be exactly what she’s looking for. Karen finds the training climate to be supportive and at the same time motivating - as she gets to work out as hard as she feels she needs to on any particular day. She usually complements the Training Camp class by hitting the treadmill afterwards. Karen and her husband Bruce (also a Boze’s alumni) live just outside of town and have a hectic life looking after a house full of kids and balancing job responsibilities. Karen finds that working out regularly has given her much more capacity to keep up with the kids. Karen recently stated that she’s much stronger that when she started the Training Camp program - and although her weight is pretty much the same she feels very good about the progress she’s making. Karen is always smiling in class and really seems to enjoy her workouts - she’s a very deserving choice for our May Member of the Month. Shelly Baxter Felton Shelly (Baxter) Felton might best be described as our motivated member of the month. The reason - she has transformed herself physically over the past two years – from a hard-working but relatively inactive businessperson into a highly fit athlete. Shelly began her physical make-over last year or two when she began walking to and from work. It was a slow start, but she knew the benefits of physical activity and persevered during the early months of her newfound activity routine. As time passed Shelly noticed she started to feel better and lose some weight that she had slowly gained over the past number of years. The walks became more intense as time passed, and she continued to feel better and better. One thing led to another - as she increased her activity she found that walking became easier. The walking led to jogging - and eventually, to working out with weights. Shelly wasn’t a Boze’s member yet, but found that weight training seemed to be the next logical step in her progression. Early this spring Shelly joined Boze’s and participated in our Training Camp classes and also started working out in the gym. Under the helpful guidance of Boze’s Trainer Wendy De la Mare Shelly has significantly ramped up her training. Shelly works exceptionally hard in the gym, in class and on the road - where she is now training to run a marathon. Yes, in just over a year Shelly has gone from nearly inactive to running marathons - and she looks and feels great. Shelly (Baxter) Felton is Boze’s June Member of the Month and a shining example of how personal motivation mixed with a little bit of training advice and a lot of hard work can have great results. Ken Levandoski Ken has been a Boze’s member for a couple of years, and during that time has seen tremendous positive changes in his fitness and overall health. Ken joined Boze’s with a goal of getting himself “back into shape”. He had become a bit sedentary during the previous few years and knew he needed to get a fitness program established. Ken started at Boze’s with a definite goal in mind – and could best be described as a “model student” (It probably is no coincidence that Ken is a teacher!) He asked specific questions about his training program, did his homework when asked to provide input into the design of his program, was open to trying new things and stuck fervently to whatever program was established for him. Ken followed the training guidelines to a tee, and found that his efforts resulted in significant positive changes. In pretty short order Ken had increased the total amount of exercise he was doing and was seeing his weight drop, his strength increase and his work day seem much easier. Ken noted pretty early on that the training, although somewhat tiring at first was helping him to feel better throughout the day. As Ken increased his volume and intensity of training he noted the results just kept on coming. Within the first year of training had achieved most of his initial goals and started adjusting some of his personal expectations. At the same time Ken was staying busy at work, was starting a new family with the addition of his first child and was curling competitively – and still finding time (mostly) to get in his regular workouts. The old axiom “busy people keep doing more stuff” seems to suit Ken, as his summer break from teaching will be filled with parenting and promoting his competitive men’s curling team. Ken Levandoski, our very deserving Member of the Month for July, 2008 Eric Irwin Eric has been a Boze’s member for a couple of years, primarily in the hockey “off-season” as he is a dedicated Noon Hour Hockey League and Dauphin Kinks regular. Eric first tried Boze’s after an NHHL season a couple of years ago – and seemed to have found a routine that fit his schedule. This year it appears Eric is having his finest “off-season” to date with almost daily workouts five times a week. Eric approaches his noon hour workouts like he approaches most of his endeavors – at full throttle. It’s rare to see Eric “coast” during a workout – and probably much more common to be awed by the vigour and intensity he puts into his training. Whether rowing, cycling, running or lifting Eric is no slouch…it’s “pedal to the metal” and full speed ahead – usually with sweat flying in all directions. (He usually has a towel close by – and he really needs it!). Eric discovered the true benefits of off-season training last year when he participated regularly in noon hour workouts during the spring and summer. He noted that his normal off-season weight gain didn’t occur to the same extent last year when he kept a fairly regular workout routine. He was stronger and lighter at the start of last hockey season and began this off-season in even better shape. His diligent workout schedule this year combined with his penchant for working out hard and often will make him more of a force on the ice this fall, so look out NHHL’ers. Eric Irwin, Boze’s deserving Member of the Month for August. Lindsay Sanderson Lindsay has been a Boze’s member (on and off) for a couple of years, primarily working out in the evenings after she’s finished work. She finds that working out helps her feel more energetic throughout the day and that the more she works out the better she feels during the day. Lindsay at first approached her workouts with a bit of trepidation – she knew she wanted to get more active but wasn’t quite sure if Boze’s was what she was looking for. It didn’t take her long to figure out that coming to Boze’s was easier than she thought – and the more she came the better she felt. Lindsay spends most of her workouts on the cardio equipment, and particularly finds the Elliptical trainers her most MEMBER NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2008 effective workout. She has progressively increased both time and intensity and finds the added effort is paying off. Although from time to time her muscles tell her she might be going a bit hard she appreciates the feedback her muscles provide her. She knows that regular activity is important to fit into her daily schedule – and usually feels great when she’s completed another workout. Lindsay Sanderson, our September 2008 Member of the Month. Val Gratton Val has been a Boze’s “aerobics” member for many years and has alternated between purchasing session passes and regular memberships. She is a regular in our 5:15 pm classes and rarely misses a class - regardless of the season or time of year. Val is a mainstay in our “after-work” classes and is one of the people we like to confer with when we’re considering class format or seasonal changes. As one of our regulars Val has seen just about all the fads and trends that have influenced group classes over the years. Her opinions on our class offerings are considered whenever we are looking to make changes to our class line-up. Personally Val seems to be partial to classes that are up-tempo and vigorous. She likes to work hard and prefers MEMBER NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2008 classes that are not overly choreographed but allow her to work up a sweat. She likely will be a regular participant in our new Wednesday afternoon class (Boot Camp EXTREME). Val likes to stay in shape and keep herself in great condition. In addition to attending classes she regularly walks to and from work on most days of the week. For that matter Val chooses to walk whenever she can. She loves to move and annually takes active vacations with her husband Ray. Val Gratton - Boze’s Member of the Month for October. Karen Cooley Karen is a relatively new member at Boze’s, joining us for the first time as a participant in our early morning Training Camp classes. Karen joined the first session last fall (2007) and has been a faithful regular member in the 6:45 am group. Karen has sometimes joked that she’s not a morning person but she has hasn’t missed many early classes. In fact Karen has become a fixture in the 6:45 am class and has participated in every session since the class started. Karen even participated in our outdoor session that was held last May/June just prior to the class taking a summer hiatus - and had her name on the top of the list for the new sessions this past September. Karen works hard in class - and has experienced strength and cardiovascular improvements in her fitness. Karen likes pushing herself in class and works especially hard when she has to partner with Maggie or one of the other instructors. Karen has a busy life, spending countless hours supporting her kids with their school and sports pursuits - and helping out at her husband Dean’s automobile business - Dean Cooley Motors. Karen Cooley, our deserving Member of the Month for November, 2008. Yvonne Hrynkiw Yvonne has been with Boze’s for many years - but has been a consistent full-time member for the past three years. She has also known David “forever” as she is his aunt. Yvonne is quite an extraordinary individual. She worked tirelessly during her long career in Health Care and since retiring has kept on going - as a volunteer for several organizations (including the local Senior’s Centre) and as a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. Her son and daughter-in-law live in California, so “roadtrips” are long - and she and her husband Bernie often have their grand-children Tyler and Tori visiting for extended periods of time. Personally she stays active by attending Boze’s, participating in Aqua-fitness MEMBER NEWSLETTER DECEMBER 2008 classes at the Recreation Complex and “dragging” Bernie out for walks at the Credit Union Place walking track. Yvonne is an activity dynamo - and those of you that know her will likely agree that she barely sits still. Maggie recently shared some new exercises with Yvonne and was “blown away” by her strength and fitness level. Yvonne has been a regular participant in our morning group classes - and since they have completed has continued working out on her own with weights and cardio equipment. Yvonne Hrynkiw, our deserving Member of the Month for December, 2008. [print this page] |
