Craig McKinnon
(January)
Craig has been a Boze’s member for years - and might be one of our
most deserving members of the month. He has worked out with a number
of different members of his family (mom, brother, sister) and
continues to frequent Boze’s - at all times of the day and night.
Craig has worked out in the mornings (early in the morning) - in the
afternoons, and in the evenings. It seems that his workout schedule
is impacted by a couple of things - his work schedule, his farm
schedule, and the schedule of his training partners. Craig is one of
our “heavy-weights” – not in terms of his body weight, but in the
amount of resistance he uses when he works out.
He usually lifts heavy - and when he’s “in-training” he’s very hard
on our equipment. Craig combines intense resistance training with a
dash of cardio - more cardio when he’s trying to shed a few extra
pounds - less when he’s trying to “beef up”. Craig is usually pretty
quiet when he works out - he knows what the task at hand is - and he
sticks to his plan.
There are times when Craig works out alone - but if you ask him
he’ll likely tell you some of his best workouts occur with his
training partners. Craig’s training schedule must be flexible - as
his time is dependent upon the farm/ranch schedule. There are often
times when Craig will pull full duty at the farm, pull at shift at
work, and still make the gym for a workout. He knows what works best
for him - and more times than not you’ll see him pounding out some
heavy reps. Craig McKinnon, a very deserving (and patient) Member of
the Month for January, 2007.
Jeff Gilroy (February)
Jeff Gilroy is “on again”! Jeff has been a Boze’s member for over
two years - and during that time has had a bit of a rollercoaster
experience working out.
A couple of years back Jeff decided that exercise was something that
he had to start incorporating into his lifestyle. He had considered
working out before, but always came up with some reason or another
to put it off. When he decided he was ready he contacted Boze’s to
set up a program.
Having a sedentary job, Jeff decided that his workouts had to be
intense enough to “make a difference”, but not so tough that he
would overwhelmed. He also decided that he needed to “set himself up
to succeed”, so he also purchased an exercise bike so that he could
supplement his Boze’s workouts with exercise sessions at home. Jeff
started with a flourish, and in pretty short order started feeling
more energetic at work.
His positive workouts were making him want to eat better - and
overall, he was steadily moving towards his goal. Then, a couple of
things happened to derail his progress. He experienced a couple of
little training related injuries that slowed his workouts. The
nagging effects led to more missed workouts, which led into some
poorer eating habits. He stopped riding his bike at home, and
started to feel tired again at work.
He eventually got back to some workouts, but found that something
was missing. He didn’t have the desire to workout - and would use
just about any reason to miss a workout. Over the past few months he
“dabbled” in exercise, but found that he couldn’t string any number
of workouts together to make any impact. Many of the gains he had
made the previous year were slipping away.
Jeff has recently returned from a vacation in the Caribbean and
has re-dedicated himself to training. He’s back on his bike at home,
and has hit the gym regularly the last couple of weeks. He says he
feels “a bit tender”, but already is feeling the positive effects of
regular exercise. He’s back in the “Boze’s saddle” and is a
deserving Member of the Month.
Russell Moore (March)
Russell (Russ) Moore is a great example of the
old axiom “you’ll lose it if you don’t use it”. Russ is a proud
retired veteran who has been working out at Boze’s for a number of
years - and is regular as clockwork (probably related to his many
years in the Armed Forces).
Russ joined Boze’s - and began his workouts
initially as a rehabilitation program to help deal with a variety of
chronic pain symptoms. He decided that working out - even in a
somewhat restrictive manner was providing considerable relief and
increased mobility and function. A comprehensive rehabilitation
program was developed (with consultation between his physician and
Boze’s) and Russ has been doing very well while exercising
regularly.
A year or so ago Russ took an unplanned break from his regular
training. He soon found that missing his workouts were causing
increased physical discomfort, and the longer he was away from
regular exercise the more uncomfortable he was feeling.
After an extended period away from the gym Russ
decided that enough was enough and he “re-enlisted” with Boze’s and
got back to his training regime. It didn’t take him long to start
getting his strength and mobility back - and the regular workouts
were again providing him with relief from his chronic symptoms.
Russ is a pleasurable person to be around, and he has plenty of
interesting stories about his wide and varied experiences serving
Canada in the Armed Forces. He was a training officer for many years
and spent most of his working life honing the skills of the young
members of our Armed Services.
Russ is meticulous in his communications and presentation (again
traits that were likely learned through his Forces experiences) and
will always interrupt his workouts for friendly chat.
Russell Moore, a very deserving
Member of the Month for March.
Ted Chura (April)
Ted is a great example of a “strong, silent type”. He works out
regularly and on most days approaches his workouts with methodical
focus.
Ted is a regular in the truest sense of the word - in that he’s at
the gym just about every evening and on weekends as well - and
usually follows his workout with a stop at another one of his
favourite stops - Tim Hortons.
Ted’s workouts include both cardio and resistance training, and
he has made significant progress in both those areas over the past
year or so. Ted works out hard, and has increased both his workout
intensity and volume as his fitness level has increased. Ted’s
workouts include many typical free weight exercises. He’s consistent
in his approach - and has seen the positive results. To add variety
to his routine Ted has added several innovative exercises to his
workouts. If you’re ever in the gym when Ted is around take a peak
to see how he makes use of the equipment.
Ted Chura, our April Member of the Month.
Sherri
Robak (May)
Sherri Robak might best be described as our mysteriously interesting
Member of the Month. She’s been a continuous member of Boze’s since
2003 and during that time she’s had an interesting series of
memberships.
Sherri first joined Boze’s in July of 2003 - when she was Sherri
McAuley - by purchasing a 2- month special membership. She followed
that up with 3-month membership - then a one-year membership.
Next came back to back one-month memberships - then another year -
and finally her current membership - a six- month package.
Phew – what a membership track record. If her membership purchases
might seem a bit “irregular” , her workouts certainly are the
opposite. Sherri is very regular when it comes to her workouts, and
usually fits them in around the noon-hour. Her workout schedule is
reflective of her work schedule - and as someone in the agriculture
industry she’s busier at different times of the year. As Spring is
one of her busiest seasons she doesn’t waste much time pre or post
workout.
She’s often in a hurry when she enters - and heads straight for the
cardio area. Same action afterwards, as she heads straight from the
equipment to the change-room to her vehicle - back to work. Although
she’s in a hurry, she keeps her cardio training regular.
Sherri Robak, our interesting, regular member of the month for May.
Jean Aitken (June)
Jean has been a Boze’s member for quite a few years – and is a
pretty regular fixture around the gym. She works at the Hospital,
and sometimes finds that her shift-work gets in the way of a regular
workout schedule. But, to her credit, Jean always seems to find a
way to get to the gym – even if it’s for a condensed or modified
workout. Jean mixes weights and cardio into her program, and changes
her focus from time to time – usually in response to feeling her
routine is getting stale. We’ve provided several modifications to
her workouts – each with pretty good success.
Jean works out primarily for health benefits, but admits she also
likes the muscle tone that comes with regular training. Jean is a
blast to chat with when she’s around the gym. She’s usually got a
good story to share – and is quick with onetimer zingers and
retorts. Jean has a great sense of humor and timing, which makes
every interaction with her an interesting experience.
Jean’s husband Harold is also a Boze’s member (and a former
Member of the Month as well) and they sometimes hit the gym
together. When this happens, David is usually willing to start the
banter by stating “Is this gentleman bothering you” when they are
side by side on the treadmill. Depending on the time of day, and the
situation, the response is usually hilarious. Jean Aitken, a most
deserving Boze’s Member of the Month for June.
Karen Davis (July)Karen has been a Boze’s member for just less than a year, but she’s
a great example of how regular physical activity can positively
impact a lifestyle.
Like many new members, Karen joined Boze’s with a desire to get
leaner, stronger and to generally feel better. She leads a hectic
life combining a busy job at the Dauphin Friendship Centre and being
an active mom – but decided that regular workouts were necessary
to fit into her schedule.
Karen realized that her busy lifestyle was beginning to take a
toll, and a family history of diabetes was lurking in her mind. She
knew she needed to do something to “start taking better care of
herself”. After a couple of back-and-forth emails with David Karen
literally took the plunge and immersed herself in Boze’s. She
started with vigour and began working out regularly.
At first, she felt tired, but energized after her workouts. She
knew though that sticking with the program was key to her long-term
success. Karen has persevered - she’s become a regular Boze’s
member in the truest sense, working out on average at least 4-5
times per week. Over the past couple of months she has modified her
training program - altering it as she progresses in strength and
endurance to make best use of her time in the gym.
As well as working out, Karen has adjusted her eating to
complement her new exercise routine. She understands that getting
and staying fit and healthy is more than just exercise. She has seen
steady progress and although her improvements sometimes don’t seem
fast enough for her, she knows the path she’s on is “more a
marathon than a sprint”. Karen Davis, our deserving Member-of the-
Month for July.
Mary Hudyma (August). Mary has been a Boze’s member (on
and off) for a number of years, but she has become more regular
in the last year or so. She’s another great example of how
regular physical activity can positively impact a lifestyle.
Like many members, Mary joined Boze’s with a friend, and they starting
working out and attending classes together. As time passed Mary’s schedule
allowed her to work out more frequently and she has since become a regular (usually
morning) exerciser.
As Mary is now setting her own pace she’s continually getting stronger
and feeling great as a result. She’s routinely doing cardio and weights
and has been a great role model for her family. (She hasn’t gotten her
husband into Boze’s yet, but has motivated him to use the walking track
at Credit Union Place.)
Mary has a strong Boze’s connection as part-time front desk staffer Tanya
Love is her daughter. Mary also has a Son (Steve) and grand-daughter (Tabi Love)
working out at Boze’s. Mary works out about 2-3 times a week - and has
kept this schedule pretty consistently over the past year.
She knows that sticking with her program is key to long-term success. Mary Hudyma,
a great role-model and a deserving Member-of-the-Month for August
Sheri Gardner (September).
Many of you might not know that Sheri is a Boze’s member
- that’s because she’s usually in and gone before
most of us are out of bed.
Sheri is an early riser and loves to work out in the morning. And when I say
early, I mean really early - she gets in the gym shortly after 6:30 am and is
usually showered and off to work before I roll in with coffee in hand just after
8:00.
Sheri works out regularly, usually three mornings a week, and
goes hard whenever she’s in the gym. She’ll usually
start her workout with a session on cardio equipment, then hit
the gym for a weight training workout that is focussed and intense.
Sheri tends not to fool around with her workouts and keeps a steady
pace to her training. Sheri has developed a routine that fits her
schedule and gives her the training benefits she’s looking
for.
Sheri compliments her Boze’s workouts with regular walks
at her lakefront home at Lake Dauphin. She can often be seen walking
with her husband Ryan and power-walking with her motherin- law
Dawn. Sheri Gardner, our September Member of the Month.
Tim DeRuyck (October)
Tim Deruyck is a Boze’s early morning regular. He works
out while most of us are still getting out of bed and is shaved,
showered and off to work before I’ve even had my first morning
cup of coffee.
As the acting Superintendent of the Mountain View
School Division Tim is a very busy fellow, but he finds a way to
hit the gym at least three times a week. (He sometimes works out
after work but finds the early mornings are much more suitable
to his schedule.) Tim is one of those fellows that uses his time
wisely. He combines cardiovascular and resistance training exercises
in his workouts and moves very efficiently through his program.
Tim is certainly not a beginner - he pushes himself on the cardio
equipment and is no slouch when it comes to moving the weights
around. Tim is very focussed during his workouts and moves with
methodical purpose. He has developed a training pattern that works
- and can be observed towelling off between sets as he leaves little
time for rest. Tim enjoys working out, and would likely work out
daily if Boze’s opened earlier on Tuesday and Thursday. However,
since he only can get in three times a week he makes the most out
of the opportunity.
Tim Deruyck, Boze’s October Member of
the Month.
Andrea has been a Boze’s member for a couple of years. When she bought her first membership she wasn’t sure how long she would be in town.... as a new employee of the school division she wasn’t sure if things would work out or not.
Andrea Carr (November)
Well, apparently things have been turning out fairly well - she’s still at the school division - is recently married and she has become a pretty solid regular member at Boze’s. Working for Mountainview School Division as a specialist Andrea travels widely throughout the division area visiting students and schools.
Boze has a running gag with Andrea and routinely bugs her about her travelling schedule and her days filled with working with students. Regardless of the gags and jokes Andrea’s workout routine is solid - she works out just about daily during the week and is a good bet to be at Boze’s some time after school and before supper most days of the week.
Andrea is a cardio member and puts in considerable time on a variety of machines - she’s partial to the elliptical trainer, and can be seen reading magazines, novels and other books during her workouts. She never asks for much help with her program as she obviously knows what she’s doing.
Andrea puts in the required time and effort to achieve the results she’s looking for.
Andrea has made Boze’s a regular part of her work day, and it’s paying off by keeping her fit and healthy. Andrea Carr, our November 2007 Member of the Month.
Bonnie Haverluck (December 2007)
Bonnie Haverluck is actually one of our original members - she and Myles purchased memberships back in 1985 when Boze’s first opened. Bonnie was a member of some of our earliest aerobics classes and was a regular member for many years.
As her family grew and life became a bit more complicated (raising three daughters can be a bit challenging) Bonnie found it more difficult to get to the gym regularly. From time to time she would renew her membership at Boze’s, but as the great Mom and wife she is - family always came first. Moving to the lake also made getting to Boze’s a bit more difficult - for many years Bonnie stayed active - but wasn’t regularly coming to the gym.
A few years ago Bonnie and Myles built a new house at the lake - and included a treadmill as part of their furnishings. Although Bonnie regularly walked (indoors on the treadmill) and outdoors, kayaked and road her bike - she still wanted to get back the gym and workout with weights. During this time Myles was working out at Boze’s as much as his schedule would allow - most recently under the tutelage of Boze’s trainer Christine Letain. Bonnie saw how Myle’s more intense workouts were benefiting him - so she finally decided to come back to the gym. She started working out with Christine and has seen tremendous fitness improvements.
Her results speak for themself - Bonnie has been a regular for the past six or seven months and has increased her strength, stamina and overall fitness. Very recently Bonnie became a grandmother for the first time. Her daughter Sara has a new baby, and bonnie finds her new strength and conditioning has been a great benefit as she helps out with her new grandchild. Bonnie Haverluck, Boze’s member of the month for December, 2007.
