Candice
Stoughton has been a Boze’s member for a couple of years -
she is a regular “Nooner” who makes her way across the
street from the Provincial Building most days of the week. Candice
works for the Parkland Regional Health Authority and is the third
person from the PRHA that has been recognized as a member of
the month. (I guess if you work for a Health Authority you should
promote healthy living.) Candice usually works out three or four
times per week, and does both cardio and resistance training. Candace
recently indicated a desire to intensify her workouts and is embarking
on a more rigorous training regime in the New Year. At times Candice
has attended Noon classes, but finds working out on the cardio
equipment more her style. (She likes to listen to a personal stereo
while she works out.) In the New Year Candice hopes to ramp up her
strength and cardio training by following a split routine style
of workout program. She’ll be focussing on both cardio and
resistance training – but will separate her workouts along
the guidelines listed in Boze’s 60 Days workout format. (See
Boze for information on the 60 Days to a New You program). Candice
Stoughton, a deserving member to start our 2006 Member of the Month
roster.
Ryxie Dupas
might never have become a Boze’s member if not for her husband – but
don’t
get the wrong impression – he didn’t buy her a membership.
Ryxie purchased him a membership gift certificate as a present
a number of years ago, but he didn’t get around to using it,
so Ryxie decided that she might as well give it a go . . . and
the rest is history. Ryxie made very good use of her membership,
and determined that renewing it would be a good idea. She’s
renewed a couple of times since. and is now considered a Boze’s
regular. Ryxie has a busy life, as she works full time and has children
involved in many school and extra-curricular activities. Ryxie oftentimes
brings one or more of her kids with her to the gym so that she
can squeeze in her workouts. Ryxie has broadened her training regime
over the past few months and has started to work significantly
harder on resistance training. She loves cardio, and regularly works
hard on the treadmill, but the weightroom has become a bit more
interesting lately. Ryxie’s program allows her to pack the
most into her workout time, as she always seems to be on the go.
Ryxie Dupas, although she had an interesting beginning at Boze’s,
has “worked
her way” to becoming our February 2006 Member of the Month.
Pat Neill is finally our member of the month. Pat has been a Boze’s
member for about 15 years, give or take, and awhile ago he was wondering
what it took to become a member of the month.
We joked that whenever his turn was coming up he took another trip
to some exotic location around the world, which meant his name slipped
down our list a few notches. Well, Pat’s wait is finally over.
Pat first became a member when we were located on Main Street.
If memory serves me correctly his first membership purchase was
going to assist him in getting in shape for a trip. Pat has since
been to many interesting places, and was actually away last year
when the tsunami struck Indonesia. He was in the area (on that side
of the world) but safely out of harms way.
When Pat is around to work out his training is regular and intense.
He combines cardiovascular conditioning with weight training, although
he incorporates a great deal of outdoor cardio pursuits. Pat is "outdoorsy" by
nature, and spends considerable amounts of time on a bike or the
water staying active.
Pat also has a pet that keeps him busy - a Jack Russell terrier – called
Jack – or Russell? It’s an interesting
story, that without going into details, also involves a friend of
his (and ours). Pat initially purchased a Jack Russell terrier,
and with some encouragement ended up naming her Jack. Not too long
after the friend purchased another Jack Russell, and called it Russell.
(I think it’s a girl too.) It’s a complicated story,
so ask Pat to fill in any details I might have missed or screwed
up.
In addition to his affinity for the outdoors and travel Pat is
involved with the Arts Centre. He’s a very interesting fellow,
and a well deserving Boze’s member of the month.
Shannon is another Boze’s “noon-hour” regular.
She works at the Credit Union and has been a consistent fixture
at our noon classes for many years. She participates in both the
high-tempo and core workouts and enjoys the convenience of working
out during her lunch break – as she and her husband Wayne
commute to Dauphin daily from their home in Gilbert Plains.
Shannon has aerobics in her blood, as she was once
an accredited Manitoba Fitness Council leader, teaching evening
classes in Gilbert Plains. David can recall accrediting her on behalf
of MFC many years ago. Since then Shannon has given up instructing
but still loves to participate in classes. David has inquired about
joining Boze’s instructors team, but so far Shannon has graciously
declined any offers.
In addition to attending classes, Shannon regularly uses the cardio
equipment on non-class days, and from time to time also includes
resistance training in her workouts. There was a period of time
last year when Shannon increased her workout intensity levels and
significantly improved her fitness. She’s been able to maintain
her high level of fitness and has commented that the new BOSU classes
are becoming new favourite of hers.
Shannon is one of our Credit Union regulars, and has become a familiar
face at Boze’s. We routinely rely on her to deliver “goodies” to
other Credit Union staffers on our behalf, and are proud to recognize
her as our Member of the Month for April, 2006.
(May)Kathy Stokotelny
Kathy has been with Boze’s from the very beginning, but took
a few years off “in between”. Kathy started at Boze’s
as an exercise instructor way back in the late 1980's. She was one
of our original crew of instructors and taught many classes for
Boze’s while we were located on Main Street.
After giving up fitness leadership Kathy spent a number of years
as a devoted mom to her two kids - Brittany and Luke (both of whom
are now members of Boze’s). She spent considerable time supporting
them as they participated in athletics and other extra-curricular
activities.
Currently Kathy has become a regular noon-hour member, and works
out predominantly during her lunch hour. After starting a new career
in real estate Kathy can be seen talking more than the occasional
call on her cell phone while working hard on the elliptical trainer.
Kathy has been an activity role model for her family, and has
arranged for a family membership that includes her husband Lyle
and the kids. Lyle usually spends most winter noon hours as an active
member of the NHL (Noon Hour League) - but has become a regular
Boze’s member during the hockey “off-season”.
Kathy still participates in the odd exercise class, and does
regular resistance training as well. She has managed to include
regular exercise in an otherwise very busy life.
Kathy Stokotelny, a wonderful activity role model for her family
and Boze’s deserving Member of the Month for May 2006.
(June) Jolene
Plawicki
Jolene has been with Boze’s for a long time - so long that
we can’t provide an accurate record, as she took a couple
of breaks between memberships - a couple of different times. Jolene
has purchased short-term and long-term memberships – so basically,
she’s just about done it all as a Boze’s member.
Initially, Jolene was a group class advocate and participated in
many of our different class offerings – yoga, stretch and
strength, tai boze, core conditioning... you name it, she probably
signed up for it. Jolene found the classes met her fitness goals
and fit into her busy schedule.
Jolene has been an evening exerciser, an after work exerciser and
a noon exerciser. Currently, Jolene is spending more time working
out at noon - and has incorporated more resistance training into
her workouts. She usually does a bit of cardio training, then follows
it up with a resistance routine that works all the major muscle
groups. Jolene Plawicki, Boze’s member of the month for June.
(July) Rob McDill
Rob has been a Boze’s member for quite some time - in fact,
he took a few breaks between memberships on a couple of different
occasions - but always seems to find his way back. Over the years
he’s brought his sons, Paul and Grant with him – and
he’s currently “coaxing” his wife Patti to consider
joining the gym.
Over the years Rob combined working out at Boze’s with his
Noon Hour Hockey schedule. He found that he could get his cardio
training at hockey, but relied on Boze’s for strength work.
Depending upon his work schedule he found that being active three
or four times a week was what he needed to stay in shape.
That was then ... in the last couple of years Rob was finding
that although he was being active just about daily, his body wasn’t
responding like it used to. A competitive hockey career in his early
years combined with middle age had resulted in a body condition
that needed a bit more attention. Rob was finding that he was slowly,
but surely getting heavier ... and he wanted to do something about
it.
This past winter Rob decided that it was time to make some changes
- so he began a healthy eating program and became more focussed
on his training at Boze’s. No longer would he be satisfied
with “going through the motions” ... he was more serious
about how he trained – balancing cardio (both NHL and work
at the gym) with strength training routines that combined core and
stabilization work. This increased training effort, combined with
his new healthy eating has produced some great results.
Rob has trimmed down close to his former “playing weight” and
he’s much leaner and arguably just as strong – and says
his body feels much better. He still has a few issues with his knees,
and needs to “warm up the machine before pushing it hard”,
but his new fitness level makes him feel great. Rob McDill, a great
role model for his kids – and a very deserving Boze’s
Member of the Month.
(July) Bruce Tycholis
Bruce has been a Boze's member for nearly ten years - although
his membership category might best be described as "on again
off again".
When he's on, Bruce is a regular workout
"fiend". He pushes himself hard, and often will come to
the gym with multiple water bottles and, shirts!, knowing that his
workout will produce far too much sweat for one shirt to hold.
He and his wife Karla (November 2002 Boze's member of the month)
recently completed a Marathon, and while Karla continues to run
Bruce has added biking and swimming to his repertoire, as his next
conquest is to complete in a triathlon. When he's "on" Bruce
can routinely be seen working out at Boze's, on the road (running
and cycling) or at the PRC aquatic centre hammering out the laps.
Bruce goes hard, and is often seen on the weekend somewhere on the
Dauphin Lake highway pounding out the miles.
Bruce has had his share of health issues in the past - including
an Achilles tendon rupture and other medical conditions - but each
time he bounces back with a flurry, and credits regular exercise
as one of the best remedies available. Bruce has recently run into
a bit of a snag in his workout program, as a wonky back has slowed
his progress. Undeterred, Bruce has modified his training in order
to keep active and, hopefully, on schedule to complete his first
triathlon.
Whether it's work (Bruce is the main guy behind Irving's Catering
- and is responsible for the many wonderful tasting Member's Lunches
we hold at Boze's) or play (Bruce has a Harley and some other "big
toys") Bruce goes to the limit. He's truly one of the nicest
people around, and a very deserving Boze's Member of the Month for
August.
(September) Theresa Zabiaka
Theresa is a regular "after-work" regular, you know it's
after 6:00 pm if Theresa is in the gym. Theresa works out most weekdays,
spending much of her time doing cardio training, but often ends
up in the weight room doing some stretching and resistance work.
Theresa has been a long-time member, and has been joined at Boze's
by her equally long-time partner (and new husband) Zen Bogoslowski.
Theresa and Zen maintained a long-distance relationship for many
years, as Zen used to live in Swan River. He recently retired and
moved "home" to Dauphin and Theresa.
In using editorial privilege for this story I secretly confirmed
that Theresa has kept her maiden name. Theresa works at Dauphin
Music and Electronics - a family owned business that has been a
Dauphin fixture for many, many years. After work she pops over the
tracks to Boze's, where on many occasions you can see mother and
daughter (Theresa's daughter Jerri Dmitruk is also a Boze's regular
member) side by side on the treadmills or elliptical trainers.
Theresa has developed a regular routine that helps her stay in
tip-top shape. She hits the cardio equipment as soon as she gets
in the gym B and has alternated primarily between treadmill and
elliptical trainer workouts. She prefers cardio training, but also
does some light weight training, core conditioning and stretching.
Theresa recently returned from a short training hiatus - she spent
some time this summer attending a family wedding in Spain. It was
an interesting trip that involved some travel snafus, and although
Theresa loved being at the wedding she was certainly glad to return
back to Canada.
Theresa enjoys working out at Boze's, and is always quick with
a smile. Theresa Zabiaka, Boze's member of the month for September.
(October) Jerri Dmitruk
Finally!!! Jerri Dmitruk is finally our Member
of the Month. In what has become a bit of a running gag between
Boze and Jerri (Last month Jerri’s mom Theresa Zabiaka was
recognized as MofM) she has finally been acknowledged for her dedication
to working out at Boze’s.
Jerri is a long-time Boze’s
member - and for at least the last year or so, whenever Boze was
trying to determine the next member of the month Jerri’s name
would be on the list. However, for whatever reason, there always
seemed to be some rationale or situation that came up that resulted
in Jerri’s name being shifted to the “top of the list” for
next month. Well, that will not happen any more...this is Jerri’s
month. Jerri keeps herself in terrific condition, and is a regular
by the truest of definitions.
She routinely makes full use of our
cardio equipment (she’s a fiend on the elliptical trainer
and the climbers), the weight room and the aerobics room. Often
during the warmer months Jerri will roll up to the door in roller
blades - doff them for her sneakers, do a tough workout and then
skate off into the sunset. Jerri has attended some of our group
classes, and on many occasions can be seen sweating it out on a
piece of cardio equipment next to her mom.
Jerri works out hard,
and during most workouts is listening to her favourite tunes
on a personal stereo. Jerri must listen to lots of tunes, because
on more than one occasion she’s asked “do you have any
extra batteries - mine are dead!” She even suggested (more
than once) that Boze’s should sell batteries. Funny thing – Boze
finally got some packages of batteries for just this type of situation
- and then found out they were the wrong size for Jerri’s
player. As previously mentioned, Jerri works out very intensely.
She pushes herself on the cardio equipment, lifts hard and does
plenty of core and functional conditioning.
I don’t know where
she comes up with her workouts, but they are certainly not for the
weak of heart. Jerri Dmitruk, our deserving (and very patient) member
of the month for October 2006.
(December) Anne Letain
Anne is one of our early morning exercisers, so some
of you reading this might be surprised to learn that she’s been a
Boze’s member for many years. Anne is usually finished her workout
and on her way home before most of us are out of our pyjamas.
Anne has a strong connection to Boze’s, as her daughter Patti
(Beaudin) is one of our fitness leaders. Patti has been with Boze’s
for over 20 years, and she initially got Anne to join (with subtle
persuasion) to increase her strength and flexibility. Anne had some
back/neck trouble and Patti convinced her that working out would be
a great way to help herself feel better.
Anne was somewhat reluctant at first, but agreed to give Boze’s a
try. At that time she was working and found it difficult to get to
the gym on a regular basis. She persevered, and over time starting
feeling stronger - which made her feel better and kept her coming
regularly to Boze’s. Anne became even more regular as she semi
retired.
It was about this same time that Patti organized
a group of instructors and members to work out early (5:30 am
was their usual start time). This regular workout time fit very
well into Anne’s schedule, and she has maintained early morning
workouts ever since. Anne’s workouts were further supported when
Boze’s began opening at 6:30 am - so now she sometimes “lingers”
a bit in the morning and doesn’t head for home until closer to
7:00 am. A
couple of winters ago Anne and her husband Pat were involved in a traffic
accident that resulted in some additional trauma to her neck -
but Anne’s conditioning speeded her recovery - and now she’s
pretty much back to normal with her workouts. Anne does regular
cardiovascular training, and commits to a regular weight
training regime that includes machines and free weights to keep
her strong and limber. It helps to have a personal trainer in
the family, as Anne gets regular advice and guidance from Patti.
As she’s now retired, Anne and Pat spend
considerable time looking after their yard and cottage, and have
a couple of relatively new grandchildren to keep them hopping.
Anne Letain, Boze’s December Member of the Month.
