Peter has been a Boze’s
member for a loooooong time - he is one of our original members – and
first purchased a membership in 1985. At that time Peter and his
wife Terrie were a childless couple (they now have three children)
and he had much more time to work out. For many years they had a
couples membership - now Peter maintains a regular membership while
Terrie has a sessional pass. The years have changes Peter’s
workouts somewhat, as he is not quite as regular at Boze’s
as he once was - but Dauphin also didn’t have an indoor swimming
pool back then. Peter spends countless hours at the pool, coaching
and training. He is an accomplished swimmer, and holds many Canadian
age group records. But back to Boze’s. As a competitive athlete
(he still swims competitively, and also enters triathlons) his resistance
workouts complement his swimming, running and cycling training.
He tries to squeeze in workouts, mostly resistance work, around
work, coaching, family and volunteer commitments. Peter’s
gym training is specific, as he mixes high intensity resistance
work with some cardio - usually running. (And I mean running - no
plodding along on the treadmill for Peter). His training is purposeful,
as he uses it to hone his technique in the pool and on the road.
He also uses resistance training to help him manage (strengthen
and stabilize) his “swimmer’s shoulders”. years
of swimming literally millions of strokes) have taken a toll on
his shoulders. Peter does a number of specific exercises and shoulder
movements to compensate for the wear and tear his shoulders have
experienced. Peter maintains top notch fitness by working out regularly
- in the pool, on the road and in the gym. He also laces up the
blades now and again (Kinsmen hockey team), and although he isn’t
quite as accomplished on the ice and he is in the water he’s
at his competitive best whenever he’s competing. Peter Doig,
Boze’s member of the month for January, 2005.
Diane is a
relatively new Boze’s
member - she’s been around on a regular basis for the past
two years. Diane is primarily a noon-hour member, as she lives in
the Grandview area and drives daily to Dauphin to work with the
Parkland Regional Health Authority. Diane sometimes attends the
odd 5:15 class, but on most noon-hours you can find her sweating
it out at Boze’s – and sweat it out she does, especially
in the compact but intense Cardio Flex classes. Diane works across
the road from Boze’s, and takes the opportunity to “mix
and match” her workouts by combining classes, cardio training
and some light resistance workouts into her routine. As noon classes
only occur three days a week, Diane can be found pounding it out
on the climbers or putting the treadmills or elliptical trainers
through their paces. When Diane works out, she’s pretty much
all business – that is, she works out hard. In fact, she sometimes
suffers the consequences of her best intentions by experiencing
training related injuries. Undeterred, she soldiers on - constantly
modifying her routines and rarely missing a workout. As Diane works
in the same office as Maggie I’m sure they’ve shared
stories and anecdotes from the gym. Diane Dingwall, Boze’s
deserving member of the month for February, 2005.
Sharon has
been a lonnnnng time Boze’s member. She first joined when we were still in our
Main Street location, and has been a regular member since the early
nineties. Sharon can be defined as a noon-hour member, and has become
a bit of a fixture each day around lunch, as she makes her way over
from the Provincial Building. Staff always know when she’s
on vacation or taking a day off, as she works out at different times
of the day. Sharon combines weight training and cardio workouts
(she seems to prefer the elliptical), and has from time to time
attended the odd class or two. Incidentally, many years ago Sharon
went through our instructor training program and was considering
a sideline as an aerobics instructor. She spent a considerable amount
of time preparing, but decided that starting a family and becoming
a parent was a greater priority than teaching classes. Over the
years that Sharon has been a member she has participated in many
of Boze’s events, and is always quick to share a story and
a good laugh. She can also be defined as a bit of a Boze’s
clothes junkie, as she has a varied sampling of Boze’s logo
clothing from over the years. Sharon Stoltz, a very deserving recipient
of our member of the month award.
Debbie McKelvey has been
a consistent “nooner” for
many years. She works across the road at the Provincial Building
and has made workouts a regular part of her life. Deb has a fondness
for physical activity, as she’s used activity as a means to
deal with a very hectic lifestyle (work has her “on the road” quite
a bit). She has also found that working out provides her with an
opportunity to “do something for herself”. Deb initially
was strictly a cardio member – she preferred workouts on the
elliptical trainer. She dabbled with weights, but developed a fondness
for reading while exercising. Deb is famous for brining in “piles” of
reading materials, mostly magazines and leaving them here for others
to enjoy. Deb is a fiend for information, and routinely sends me
interesting fitness related articles, emails and other bits of related
information. Deb is also a music junkie – she can tell you
the name of just about any song and the artist – and she knows
the proper words to the songs (contrary to what David might think
are the words as he rambles on during most noon hours). Debbie has
recently picked up her training a notch or two, and has reincorporated
resistance training into her regular routine. She also has found
that interval training on the cardio equipment has resulted in significant
fitness gains – although working at a much higher intensity
has meant that reading isn’t such an easy option any longer.
Deb is always quick to provide interesting anecdotes to topical
stories and issues, as she is very well-informed on current affairs.
Debbie is also fairly proficient at trivia, and has been successful
in winning prizes on radio call in shows. Deb McKelvey, a deserving
Boze’s Member of the Month for April, 2005.
Charlotte recently
renewed her membership for another year, and is starting her
third consecutive year of being active at Boze’s. Charlotte
usually works out over lunch time, making her way across the street
from the PRHA offices in the Provincial Building. Charlotte initially
joined Boze’s
to help her maintain a healthy weight and keep herself toned.
Her almost daily workouts helped her reach and maintain those goals.
She also put in some extra training time last year to help her
prepare for her wedding – and by all accounts she was a stunning
bride. Charlotte mixes resistance and cardio training into her workouts.
She has attended some of the noon aerobic classes, but finds
it difficult to read her book during class. (I have a bit of a running
gag with Charlotte – she loves to read during her cardio workouts.
I’m always joking that she’s reading trashy novels instead
of informative non-fiction.) Next time you see her in the gym
ask her about what she’s reading – I bet it isn’t
a text book. Charlotte has modified her training program from
time to time over the years she’s been at Boze’s, and
appears to have found the right combination of weight training and
aerobic conditioning to keep her fit and healthy. Charlotte Garlinski – Boze’s
member of the month for May, 2005.
Jack is
a Boze’s
original. He initially purchased a membership in 1985, and has
kept it pretty much current for the past twenty years. (He’s
alternated between full year memberships and other options,
but has consistently been a member.)
Jack has
become a 5:15 pm class staple - he has a favourite spot (back
left corner, near the fan) and is known for coming in early and
doing some stretching and other exercises before class starts. Jack
also is very well known for leaving class after the cardio segment – It
seems he’s not particularly fond of the floorwork portion
of class.
Jack hasn’t
always been just an aerobics class member - he has “dabbled” in
the weightroom over the years, although he gravitates back to
the aerobics room to provide his “Uh huhs” and “Oh
Yeahs” whenever David teaches. (It’s a bit of
a running gag, but Jack has made famous the response of “Oh
yeah” whenever David says “Uh huh” – and
vice versa.)
Over the
years Jack has become fond of certain styles of instruction and
certain class formats. As a long-term member he’s seen just
about everything in the aerobics room – and has been a great
provider of feedback whenever we’ve asked him to comment
on class design, format and other aspects of our group exercise
program.
Jack Bay,
a Boze’s original and a very deserving Member of the Month.
Delores is
a new Boze’s member - and recently renewed her three month
membership and replaced it with a one-year plan. She’s obviously
someone who’s pretty satisfied with the health benefits
she’s attained by engaging in regular physical activity.
Delores originally joined Boze’s
to help her feel better – she was admittedly "out of
shape" and although a bit nervous at first about coming to
Boze’s, wanted to try something different. She was experiencing
a significant amount of physical discomfort in her feet and
decided that exercise was the most appropriate course of action.
Although somewhat limited by
the pain in her feet, Delores jumped right into a regular training
program. She knew her activity program had to be flexible,
as her job keeps her on her feet for significant periods of time.
She wanted aerobic exercises that didn’t add any additional
stress and a resistance training program that would "firm
her up".
Delores started slowly, but almost
immediately started to see positive results. She noted that
her weight training program made her feel stronger at work, and
her feet weren’t bothering her quite as much. Her cardio bike
training routine and basic weight training program were working,
As she got more comfortable with
Boze’s Delores began to modify her program. New exercises
were added, including core and stability ball work, and she
began to lengthen her cardio training sessions.
Since her start at Boze’s
in October, 2004 Delores has shown tremendous dedication to
her workout schedule, with very positive results. Delores Lulashnyk,
a deserving candidate for our July Member of the Month.
Derek has been
a Boze’s member for a long time. He started his relationship
with us in 1988 when, as a high-school football star, he and
his brother Robbie began working out to complement their football
skills.
Soon thereafter both Derek and
Robbie also started working for Boze’s, fitting in shifts
at the front desk between practices and school. After graduation
and a stint away from Dauphin Derek returned, and eventually
found his way back to the gym.
In the early days Derek was somewhat
shy and reserved. He was the type of guy who liked to keep
to himself while training – but did partner up with some pretty
big guys. For several years his partners included the likes of
Wade Kabel, Shawn Caruk, Craig McKinnon and Cory Sydor – all
considerably bigger and heavier. Although outweighed Derek
regularly matched their performance in the gym.
In addition to being very strong
he is also very quick. David recalls a pick-up football game
many years ago where he chased Derek the full length of the field – never
able to "make the tag". David "used to be" pretty
fast himself, however Derek was someone he could never catch.
Derek continues to workout regularly,
however his training program has changed somewhat. He continues
to stay in great shape, but the time he spends in the gym is
reduced as his responsibility as a Manager at Thunder’s Restaurant
is increased. However rushed he might be, he still has time
to chat and banter about the NFL.
Derek is a HUGE Philadelphia
Eagles fan (Don’t mention T.O.) and maintains a season-long
gabfest with David about the game. Derek Tomkins, Boze’s
member of the month for September, 2005
Darren
joined Boze’s in September 2002, and since then has become
a consistent feature at Boze’s. He usually works out at
noon, but has also been around in the late afternoons and evenings – it
depends on whether he’s in town or not. Darren works for
MTS and is regularly "on the road" – but whenever
he’s around Dauphin he makes it in for a workout.
Over
the time Darren has been at Boze’s he’s involved himself
in a number of different workout programs. Although most of
his workouts are fairly intense, he likes to change emphasis at
different times of the year. Last spring, for instance, Darren
embarked on a serious program that included rigorous weight training
and cardio workouts. He included bodyfat testing, and showed tremendous
improvements over his training period.
As
well as working out Darren also likes to ride his bike, and
he plays a mean game of slow pitch. Darren has a knack of being
at Boze’s at the right time (for David that is). His "handyman" skills
have been put to the test on more than one occasion when repairs
and other things are needed. He’s also well known for selecting
the same brand of energy bar – day in and day out.
Darren
has become a regular face at Boze’s (I don’t think
he’s missed a member lunch yet), and is always willing to
help out. Darren Killen, October Member of the Month.
Joan
has been around Boze’s for a long time – although
her length of tenure isn’t an indicator of her age! She’s
been a regular, at varying times, for many years, and currently
is "hitting the weights" with a passion.
Joan
began at Boze’s as an aerobics class participant, becoming
a fixture at our noon classes. In the early days she was the matriarch
of a family membership plan that included three children – who
are now "all grown up" – although, like a good
Mom, Joan still worries about them.
A
couple years back Joan experienced some back troubles and was
required to limit her exercise participation. Through a rigorous
rehab process she’s regained her strength and mobility and
now prefers Core and Mat based classes. What’s a bit different
about Joan’s use of Boze’s is her penchant for resistance
training.
Joan
(and regular training partner Collette Robinson) are pretty
consistent with their early morning workouts. Yep, Joan is an advocate
of the "before work" workout, and has seen great progress
in her conditioning over the past few months.
Joan
works out about three times per week with the weights, and
complements her training with cardio work and regular noon hour
classes. She’s
an advocate of the benefits of regular activity, and maintains
her health with regular workouts.
Joan
McKinnon, a truly deserving Member of the Month.
Vlad
is a throwback - a guy who works hard – really hard in the
gym, and is reaping the benefits of regular exercise. Vlad joined
Boze’s soon after we first opened the doors at our old Main
Street location. In those days he was working on his own, and
tried to make time for exercise. He was an on again, off again
exerciser, and after a few years drifted away from working
out regularly.
A
couple of years ago Vlad came back. He had changed careers,
had some kids along the way, and was starting to "show his age" a
little. It didn’t take long for Vlad to get back on track – and
his regular routine is a testament to his desire to get and
keep himself in top shape.
Vlad
follows a rigorous training routine – he splits his cardio
and weight workouts and is in the gym daily – sometimes
twice to refine his techniques. Vlad is a stickler for detail,
and is never at a loss to ask a question that helps him with
his training.
In
addition to regular exercise Vlad has found that proper nutrition,
rest and recovery has been a benefit to his program. Vlad is
so "pumped" about
his program that he signed his daughter up last year – and
more recently got his son to join him. Now it’s a common
sight to see Vlad and his son Taylor working out at the same
time.
Vlad
has made a habit of borrowing some of Boze’s books to read
up on fitness, exercise and nutrition. He’s working hard,
both in the gym and in analysing his routine – all in an
effort to achieve his fitness goals. Vlad Lachowsky, Boze’s
Member of the Month for December.
