Mary Kay and Angela are
not the first co-recipients of our member-of-the-month award,
but they are the first mother-daughter team to be acknowledged.
Mary Kay and Angela are relatively new Boze’s members, but becoming
a member-of-the-month isn’t just about how long someone has
been a member – it’s about what a membership has done
for them. Angela was the first Scinocca to join Boze’s, doing
so a couple of years ago. Angela was initially interested in becoming
more active, and thought Boze’s was the right place to get
started. After experiencing some early success Angela determined
Boze’s was giving her what she needed, and continues to be
a regular participant. She’s a consistent morning exerciser,
primarily working on the elliptical and treadmill – with regular
attendance at the low impact morning classes. Mary Kay joined a
bit after Angela, and has somewhat different goals for her exercise
routine. Mary Kay was concerned about osteoporosis, and took up
exercise to help her combat the illness. A bone scan last year informed
her of the condition, and after careful deliberations she decided
exercise would be her best course of action. Somewhat skeptical
at first, Mary Kay participated in a few of our special interest
classes like Core Stretch and Low Impact. She found the experience
to be to her liking, and has, as a result, become a daily exerciser.
Her added strength and muscle tone have helped to improve her posture,
and as a result she’s feeling better and participating in
more intense activities. Mary Kay and Angela routinely work out
together, but have also established their own routines. They are
a fitting combo to be recognized as our January 2004 members-of-the-month.
Ann has been a Boze’s member longer than she has been a Dandeneau (she
and Marc have been married for a couple of years), and during that
time she has modified her exercise habits to incorporate a dedicated
training regime. Last year she had a few discussions with Boze about
her workout habits, and since then has embarked on a somewhat more
serious routine of cardio and resistance training. Ann can regularly
be seen in the weight room, binder and pen in hand, dutifully recording
each rep and set of her workout. She’s a stickler for detail,
ensuring that one eye is always on the clock – going so far
as timing her rest breaks during some workouts. She has fine tuned
her workouts over the past year, and has begun sharing some of her
training experiences with her friends and colleagues. Ann’s
job with the provincial government sometimes impacts her training
schedule, but her dedication and persistence has made her an obvious
member of month selection. Ann Dandeneau, Boze’s member-of-the-month
for February.
Harry Zamiskis has had an on-again off-again relationship
with Boze’s
over the years. Harry first joined Boze’s about 8 years ago
at the urging of his business partner Bruce Childs. It seems his
membership participation is directly related to his schedule – although
his latest foray into working out is based on a specifically designed
program developed just for him. Harry’s current workout combines
weight training with cardio workouts – on a five and sometimes
six session per week schedule. He alternates between upper and lower
body weight workouts and cardio training, and other than work commitments
has been on the new program for almost six weeks. The new workout
is quite a diversion from previous workout programs Harry has been
on, but he was ready to make a new commitment to a healthy lifestyle.
Harry’s current focus in on weight loss and weight management.
The program includes healthy eating, regular exercise and adequate
amounts of rest and recovery – quite a bit different from
his previous programs which included heavy doses of cardio training.
Harry likes his new workout schedule and what it’s doing for
him. Harry Zamiskis, Boze’s member of the month for March.
Ryan Rauliuk might best be described as Boze’s “evening regular”.
He’s had a membership since 1993 but rarely if ever works
out at any other time. You could probably set your watch by Ryan – he’s
that consistent. Ryan has a regular routine, which includes grabbing
his favourite candy from the bowl before and after his workout.
During his workout Ryan combines cardio training and weights, usually
working up quite a sweat. If you ask him he’d probably comment
that sweating during his workout is necessary – as he has
a particular fondness for Ukrainian food. Ryan is involved in a
number of volunteer activities. He limits his workouts on certain
evenings to ensure he is available for another activity he’s
pretty well known for – being a top-notch Bingo caller at
the Ukrainian Orthodox Hall. Ryan spends many hours volunteering
at the Hall and working with the Ukrainian Orthodox Men’s
Association. When he’s at the gym Ryan usually has a smile
on his face, and he is known to tell a funny story or share a joke
or two when prompted. He’s usually got a smile on his face,
and seems to really enjoy his workouts. He hasn’t changed
his routine much over the years, but why should he – routine
seems to be what he likes most at Boze’s. In closing there’s
probably only one thing Ryan will now change in his routine. He’ll
likely stop asking when he’s going to be selected member of
the month”. In all the years he’s been a member, Ryan’s
joked that he’s always overlooked for member of the month.
Not any more – Ryan Rauliuk, our member of the month for April
2004.
Betty is a newer Boze’s member – having first joined us in January ‘03.
However, based on the number of times she’s worked out since
joining (189) we feel we’ve gotten to know her very well.
Betty joined Boze’s through an MGEU promotion last winter,
and our relationship has flourished since then. Betty is a regular
participant in our Noon and 5:15 classes, and has also frequented
most of the special classes we’ve offered. It doesn’t
matter whether the class is Yoga or Pilates, Tai Boze or Boot Camp,
Betty will likely be there. But don’t get the impression that
she only attends classes – she also works out with the cardio
equipment and has dabbled a bit in the weight room. Speaking of
the weight room, Betty “hit the weights” a bit this
past winter to supplement her other fitness habit – snowshoeing.
Betty is an avid snowshoer, and spent most Sundays this past winter
tromping around in the bush. She and Cherie routinely shared Monday-morning
stories of their weekend escapades in the bush. (Cherie is also
a snowshoer!) Betty complements these exercise habits with daily
walks – primarily to and from work. (Her office is conveniently
located across the street at the Provincial Building.) These activities
give you the impression that Betty is living a pretty healthy lifestyle.
Betty Hanson, a relatively “new face” who has quickly
become a Boze’s regular – and a deserving Member of
the Month for May, 2004.
Our June member of the month is unique in that
he is the first member of the month who will leave Boze’s
at the end of his “term”. Father Mark Tarrant is on
the move to a new parish – after six years in Dauphin and
almost three as a member of Boze’s. Father Mark was first
pointed out to us by a former member – Helene Compton, who
suggested we should get him started on a workout and exercise
program. We made a call to the parish – but it took Mark a
couple of years before he finally made the time to drop by Boze’s
and give us a look. Since then he’s become a regular fixture,
running two or three times a week during early afternoons whenever
he can get away from the parish. Mark used regular exercise (running,
mostly) to help him shed a bunch of weight (over thirty pounds)
and kick a nasty smoking habit. He’s also suggested, on more
than one occasion, that exercise also helps him deal with the
myriad stresses related to running two separate parishes. Mark is
certainly a busy guy, but tries to jiggle his schedule as much as
possible to get into the gym at least a couple of times per week.
Mark continues running – to help him manage his weight, control
stress and keep David up to date on what’s happening in the
world. Over the past couple of years Mark has helped pace David
when they’re
both running (David routinely put off working out until Mark
shows up. It seems the two of them have a similar pace and running
style – and
also have eerily similar interests in television shows.) Anyone
in earshot during their training runs gets a dose of the latest
goings-on in a number of mainstream and “fringe” television
programs. In addition to having a bit of a television habit,
Mark is also a voracious reader. He regularly bring in the latest
news articles from national newspapers, news-magazines and the
internet and shares his opinion with the afternoon staff. Mark is
quick with his wit, and doesn’t mind “mixing it up” – intellectually
speaking. He’s also a bit of a joker and likes to have a laugh
now and then. Mark gave weight training a try a little over a
year ago, but it didn’t fit into his workout routine. He likes
to hit the links whenever he gets a chance, but his busy and “always
on call” schedule doesn’t allow him much free time.
He’s often mentioned that getting into Boze’s is a tough
enough challenge. We’re going to miss Mark, especially David
and Terry who have come to know him quite well through his afternoon
workouts. However, our “loss” is his family’s
gain, as he’s heading to a Winnipeg parish where his mom lives.
Good luck Mark – you’ll always be welcome at Boze’s
as our June, 2004 Member of the Month.
James has been a Boze’s member
since he was a kid (over six years), and although he is currently
attending the U of M he is back and working out with us during
the summer. He first came in with his dad Jim (also a former member
of the month) and they have been one of the enduring father/son
workout teams at Boze’s over the years. James is deserving
of our Member of the Month award because of his recent successes
in amateur bodybuilding. James entered his first contest this
past March, the Manitoba Novice, and made the podium. In his second
contest this past June he entered the MB Provincial Bodybuilding
Championships and placed first in his age group, qualifying him
for the Canadian finals in Edmonton this coming August. James isn’t
sure whether or not he’ll
compete in Edmonton yet, as the rigours of training and juggling
numerous summer jobs is making it difficult to focus completely.
Training is very time consuming, and preparing for his first
contest gave him “a taste” of what it takes to be successful.
As his performance during the Provincials attested, he is a quick
study. James says that dieting is the most difficult part of
training, especially as the contest nears. He says “You tend
to get edgy when you’re hungry” and lifting heavy is
hard enough without having to restrict calories. James has been
fortunate to be relatively injury-free, and continues to work
out hard. James is another example of one of our members being smitten
with the lure of bodybuilding – and becoming a success at
it. Prior to bodybuilding James had a stellar sports career during
his highschool years. In particular, he was a leader on the Clipper
football team and quarterbacked the squad for a couple of seasons.
He also played basketball and participated in other individual
sports. James has suggested that working out has helped him in his
athletic endeavours, but that this past year has really shown him
what can be accomplished by hard work in the gym. James has stayed
away from performance enhancing products and attributes his success
to hard work, good genetics and positive role models. Speaking of
role models, his dad has been his greatest fan and a great ally.
Jim first suggested weight training to James as a healthy option
to help him with sports. Jim had numerous talks with David years
ago to determine “when
James would be old enough”, and his early guidance is partly
responsible for James’s success today. A Boze’s ritual
has been re-established this summer, as Jim and James are once
again showing up after school and work to work out together.
James Nakonechny, Boze’s very deserving member of the month
for July.
Garry, or as he’s known to his closer friends “Swanie” has
been a Boze’s member s (on and off) since 1993. He’s
been much more on than off in the past four or five years – and
has become a regular Boze’s nooner – working out most
days during his lunch break. Boze first met Garry back in 1983 – and
during those days Swanie spent his noon hours at the rink. He
was quite the hockey player, and could still wheel on the ice
if his knee didn’t give him trouble. Garry’s knee problems
go back to his younger athletic days – he played most sports
and was an accomplished athlete in just about every sport he
played. Garry might arguably be in better shape now than he was
back then, as he works out consistently and has included a rigorous
stretching in his routine. Next time you’re in the gym over
lunch see if you can spot Garry – if you don’t know
him he’s
the guy with his leg up on the shoulder press bar (yep, he can
pretty much get his foot over his shoulder when he stretches).
Garry likes being active, and spends considerable time outdoors,
especially during hunting and fishing season. In addition to being
a great athlete, Garry is an accomplished back-country guide. He
also spends a couple weekends each winter helping out Larry Bosiak
with his Ice Fishing Contests across Canada. Garry, for those of
you who don’t know is married to Boze’s staffer Laurie
and has two grown daughters who are also accomplished athletes in
their own right. They are an active family, as both Garry and Laurie
volunteer for many local causes. Garry is currently the co-chair
of the Sport Committee for the Summer Games, so he’s going
to be pretty busy for the next couple of weeks. Garry “Swanie” Dixon,
a very deserving Member of the Month for August.
Sue Lucas has not been a Boze’s
member for very long, but she’s probably responsible for more
wear and tear on our treadmills than any other member. The reason,
Sue is an ultramarathoner – that’s right, 26.2 miles
isn’t a long enough run for her. Sue has run marathons and
triathlons, and this past spring she competed in a 50-mile ultramarathon.
It seems that 50 miles wasn’t quite enough of a challenge,
so last month Sue entered the 125 km Canadian Death Race in Grand
Cache, Alberta. Apparently Sue liked the challenge, as she finished
first in her age group and 23rd overall in a time of 20 hours,
40 minutes and 45 seconds. The Death Race has a 24 hr time limit,
and Sue was one of only 71 finishers from the 172 person field.
During the past couple of months Sue has turned a few heads at
Boze’s,
primarily when she spends upwards of four hours on a treadmill.
On one Saturday earlier this spring Sue asked whether or not
she could “run for a long time” on our last treadmill.
I indicated it would be fine for her to run as long as she needed.
Well, she started at 10:00 am, and other than a couple of water
breaks, ran steadily until we closed the doors at 2:00 pm. Sue
mixes in the odd weight training session into her workouts, but
has focussed primarily on cardio conditioning. She plans on continuing
her running, and is intrigued by ultra-style events. Congratulations
Sue, on your great finish at the recent Canadian Death Race,
and for being our September, 2004 Member of the Month.
Mark has been a long-time
Boze’s
member – in spurts. He joined, along with his wife Linda in
our first year, and for a number of years both he and Linda attended
classes and worked out at our facility on Main Street. Don’t
kid yourself, Mark was a pretty regular aerobics class attendee
during those early years. He was also pretty steady in the weight
room. After taking a couple of years off from Boze’s Mark
returned - this time primarily to use our cardio equipment. He’s
become a mainstay of our noon-hour crowd, regularly putting some
hard miles on the treadmills. Some might even suggest that he’s
a bit rough on our equipment. Actually, he was “the rider” on
treadmill #5 a couple of weeks ago when the front bearings blew.
It made a pretty big noise as it ground to a halt. Apart from
some good natured ribbing no damage was done to either Mark or
the treadmill, and I’m happy to say that both are back in “running” form.
Mark likes to stay active, and complements his Boze’s workouts
with home exercise, golf and other outdoor pursuits. He and Linda
have a new place at the lake that requires a bit of “yard-work” to
get things all finished. Mark McMunn, a long-time member who
deserves to be recognized as Boze’s Member-of-the Month for
October.
Teresa has been a Boze’s member for a couple of years - and
tries to squeeze in workouts around work and family commitments.
Teresa is a physiotherapist (as is her husband Greg) who works part-time
for the Parkland Regional Health Authority. She’s an active
working mom, who’s
very involved in the activities of her two sons, Dylan and Nolan.
Until Nolan reached school age last year Teresa would often have
him in tow when she worked out. It was routine to see Teresa
head to the conference room to set up the VCR before she hit
the equipment. Now that Nolan is in school full-time Teresa has
quite a bit more time for her workouts. Teresa combines weight training
and cardio conditioning in her workouts, and has been increasing
the tempo of her treadmill work in the past couple of months.
She has considered training for a half marathon, and still might
be thinking it’s
a possibility sometime in the future. Teresa did some running
with Maggie this past year, and joked that she had to take too
many steps to keep up. Teresa is a stickler for safety and good
technique when she works out (must be all that formal therapy training),
and mixes free weight exercises with some of the weight machines.
She primarily works out for health benefits, but often times can
be convinced to include a cup of coffee with her morning workout.
Teresa usually works out first thing in morning, and regularly gets
to Boze’s
a couple of times per week. Besides working out at Boze’s
Teresa is an active mom who is involved in the Henderson Parent
Council, likes the arts (and the Arts Centre), can often be seen
at the rink tying skates or at the pool during family swim, has
her kids in music lessons, soccer and many other activities.
She’s
an avid reader, and likes to drive long distances for a good
meal. Teresa Loucks, Boze’s member of the month for November.
I have a bit of a running gag with the Clintons – with Sharlene
it has to do with the spelling of her name. I always get confused
and use a C. With Darrin, it’s a constant discussion about
the Dallas Cowboys and whether they are better than the Miami
Dolphins. Boze’s also has one other thing “in common” with
the Clinton’s – front desk staffer Mitchell – their
son, and one of our part-time phenoms. Darrin, Mitchell and Sharlene
joined Boze’s in 2003. They seemed like nice people right
from the get go, and after snatching Mitchell to work the desk
we’ve
developed a bit of a relationship with the family. Although they
have a family membership, their schedules are typical of many
active families – thereby not allowing many mutual workout
sessions. Darrin primarily works out during the day, as his shift-work
has him working some “wonky hours”. Sharlene, on the
other hand, typically gets to Boze’s in the evenings and on
weekends. Both Darrin and Sharlene combine cardio and weight
training, and have been pretty regular since they initially joined
over a year ago. Darrin has tried to work in exercises that help
alleviate a back problem he experiences, and has found weight training
to be beneficial. He’s currently “tweaking” his
program a bit to better reflect his training goals. Sharlene, on
the other hand is primarily training for health benefits. She’s
a regular on the treadmill, and has a weight training routine
that helps her work towards her fitness goals. Both Darrin and Sharlene
are quick with a smile and or a friendly chat. They exemplify
the kind of members Boze’s cherishes – friendly people
who are easy to get along with. Darrin and Sharlene, December 2004
Boze’s
Members of the Month.
