Marilyn has
been a member since 2000, although her first membership purchases
were for three months each - 12 months apart. That’s right, Marilyn “checked us out” before
she found her way to becoming a Boze’s member. She made the
big commitment a year ago, and has been a regular ever since. Marilyn
is famous for walking to Boze’s, and in the winter routinely
shows up with frosted glasses and rosy cheeks - ready for her workout.
In the summer she often time jokes about “wanting the air
conditioning on” as she makes her way in on a hot day. She’s
also infamous for being someone who doesn’t mince words, and
has, from time to time, advised us about music and other things
important to members. Her comments are always right on the mark.
Marilyn brings a refreshing persona to the gym, and takes her workouts
seriously. She regularly mixes cardio and weight training workouts
and doesn’t mind working up a good sweat on the rowing machine.
Marilyn has found a workout home at Boze’s, and we couldn’t
be happier to have her around. Marilyn Foulis, Member of the Month
for January, 2003.
“Kabe-Man”,
as he’s known to his buddies, has been a member of Boze’s
since he was a “twenty-something” young pup back in
1991. Wade has pushed and pulled and lifted tons of Boze’s
weights since then, and is a deserving recipient of our Member
of the Month award. Since our early days on Main Street Wade has
made a routine out of the following: parking a four-wheel drive
(too many different models to mention) in the parking lot; carrying
in a humungous gymbag (packed with clothes, belts, straps, etc....)
leaving a cell-phone on the counter (in case work calls); and
ripping through a hellacious workout that usually includes heavy
lifting and up-tempo cardio. Wade might be best described as a fitness
machine, as over the years he’s been able to pack on pounds
of muscle – and
strength. Lately Wade’s been working really hard on increasing
his strength in preparation for the upcoming Kinsmen Trade-Fair
Strongman Competition. Wade might of surprised himself a bit
last year when he finished his first strongman competition near
the top of the pack. That strong finish last year has him shooting
for even a better performance this year. Speaking of performance,
Wade is also a proud “papa to be”. Wade and Erica (also
a Boze’s
member) are expecting soon. Wade Kabel – February’s
Member of the Month.
Dave has been a member of Boze’s since 1994, and
during that time it could be argued that he’s changed a bit.
In the early years Dave could have been described as a “work
hard -play hard” type of fellow. He scheduled his workouts
around his busy farming interests and hit the weights hard whenever
he was in the gym. I don’t want to suggest he’s mellowed
over time, as he still keeps the same workout traditions he’s
used for years: he always listens to his own music on headphones,
he always has his own water bottle with him and he always times
his rest and recovery periods with a watch. Dave is pretty much “all
business” when it comes to working out – there is little
or no fooling around when he’s in the gym . However, getting
married last year seems to have “taken the edge off him” just
a bit. Dave’s wife Tanya also has a membership, and she’s
currently enrolled in a horticultural and landscape design course.
She has had an effect on Dave, as he’s now into berry farming
(Dave will have a great crop of raspberries and strawberries
next year) – just ask him about weeding 5 acres of berries.
In addition to being a regular member over the years Dave has often
times volunteered to weld pieces of equipment as they break down.
and is very helpful around the gym. He’s always ready with
a story or two, and has been a great guy to have around – as
he has been known to remind people to pick up their weights and
re-rack the plates when they are finished. Dave Malowski, Boze’s
member of the month for March.
Dennis and Kelly McKay might
best be described as Boze’s “quiet couple”. Although
they’ve
had a couples membership ship since 1998 (Dennis has been a member
since 1996, Kelly shortly afterwards) few know they are actually
a couple because their schedules rarely allow them to work out
at the same time. Dennis usually works out during the afternoon – when
it’s pretty quiet at Boze’s. He has a regular routine
which involves pretty serious running and weight training . (I
tried pacing him a couple of times, and had to stop talking to
keep up). This past winter in particular has been a good one for
Dennis, as he’s made significant strength and endurance improvements
by sticking to a regular workout schedule. Kelly on the other
hand, also works out hard, with both weights and cardio training,
but usually does so on evenings and weekends. Since they have
different schedules its rare to see them working out at the same
time, although Dennis did comment that they did work out together
one Saturday. That is a rare occurrence, as Dennis and son Aaron
spend a lot of time at the rink during the winter playing hockey.
That’s
right, staying in shape is a family affair, as Dennis and Kelly
added Aaron to their couples membership last year. Their family
membership gets good use, as it helps keep the boys in shape
for hockey, and Kelly strong for baseball. She’s an accomplished
softball player – so the entire family benefits from their
Boze’s membership. Dennis and Kelly McKay, Boze’s “quiet
couple” are our members of the month for April, 2003.
Dennis has been
a steady Boze’s member since the spring of 1999. He is mostly
a “Nooner”, that is, most of his workouts occur during
the noon hour. Dennis first joined Boze’s as an off-season
option to Noon Hour Hockey (NHL). Dennis was a long-time member
of the NHL, but found that he “needed something more” than
just skating to keep himself in shape. During the first few years
of his membership Dennis alternated his noons between the NHL
and Boze’s, but found that his back felt much better when
he spent more time working out and less time skating. This past
year Dennis devoted much more time to Boze’s, and indicates
his back is feeling much stronger. This spring he even went so
far as to get information from Boze about their 60 Days to a
New You Program. Dennis decided it was something that he wanted
to try, and the early results have been tremendous. The new program
Dennis is on has him working out six days per week, alternating
between cardio and weight training sessions. He’s incorporated
intervals into his cardio workout and uses a split routine approach
with his weights. The program has resulted in strength increases
and body fat decreases. The program also incorporates healthy
eating and plenty of water and rest. Dennis has found the transition
into the new workout and lifestyle rather seamless, and has really
begun to push himself during workouts. Dennis noted that the
more intense workouts seem to fit well with his balanced six meal
a day eating plan, and he’s
not really ever hungry. Dennis is about half-way through the
initial stage of the program, and is already reaping the benefits.
Dennis Stykalo, Boze’s member of the month for May.
Colette is
one of Boze’s
Noon Class regulars. She’s been coming to Boze’s for
a number of years, although we can’t confirm her original
start date – she’s on her third or fourth membership
number because from time to time she has also taken the odd break
between memberships. Regardless, Colette is a mainstay (front
right corner) in Noon classes, and also attends 5:15 classes
occasionally. She seems to love all forms of aerobics, and has
a penchant for selecting the exercise ball that makes the weirdest
noise during Core Stretch classes. We all get a giggle going
when Colette rolls over the ball and “that noise” is
heard. Colette also has a habit of wearing oversized t-shirts,
shirts that are so long they cover her tights. Whenever a certain
instructor (who shall remain nameless) teaches class he usually
suggests that Colette “changed
in a hurry” and forgot her bottoms. She never has, but it’s
another regular gag that puts smiles on everyone’s faces.
If there is one thing that can be said about Colette, it’s
that she’s always smiling. It’s obvious when she’s
not in class, because her gleaming smile and infectious laugh
is missing. Colette Robinson, our fun-loving and always smiling
member of the month for June.
Cory might come across as a bit of
a “shy guy”,
but don’t let his quiet demeanor suggest his workouts are
the same. Cory has been training (cardio and weights) at Boze’s
since first joining eight years ago, way back in 1995. And during
that time, he’s “moved a lot of weight around and climbed
miles on the stairclimber”. Cory works out at regularly, and
at a variety of different times. You might see him early in the
morning or late at night -- but regardless of the time, one thing
is certain -- Cory is regular. To prove the point, Cory has signed
into Boze’s nearly 200 times since last April. Looking back,
that’s an average of every second day for the last year and
a half. Cory splits his workouts into cardio and weight training
sessions. He’s a regular “climber”, and pushes
the steppers pretty hard. His training has allowed him to remain
virtually injury-free over the years, and to maintain a program
that has progressively increased his strength and endurance.
Cory Didur, our “shy” member of the month for July.
Ryan might best be known as our “Comeback” member of the month.
He recently was “on the shelf” due to some medical issues,
and attributes his recovery to his regimen of regular exercise.
Ryan is slowly re-attaining the strength and conditioning level
he had prior to surgery – and appreciates, now more than ever,
the values working out have provided him with. Ryan has been
a Boze’s
member since 1998, and early on developed a parking habit, that
Boze jokes has become a compulsive obsession. When Ryan first
joined Boze’s he noticed the parking lot was usually quite
full when he came to workout. He decided that the best place
to park was on the road, about half a block down the street.
Considering Ryan is a teacher and is somewhat limited in the
times he can workout during the school year, the parking spot remained
constant during the fall, winter and spring. However, when the
school year is finished, and Ryan has the option of working out
at quieter times during the day, he still parks down the street,
even when the parking lot is empty. When questioned about it, Ryan
simply smiles and says “some
habits die hard”. Ryan’s habit of exercise is nourished
by regular workouts during the work year, and somewhat more frequent
workouts during the summer. Ryan favours weight training to cardio,
and puts himself through a fairly rigorous routine whenever he’s
in the gym. Over the years Ryan has noticed significant strength
gains, but also credits working out with helping him handle the
stresses related to his profession. (Ryan has dual responsibilities,
as he is both a teacher and administrator in Winnipegosis). Ryan
Paziuk, our deserving August, 2003 member of the month.
Irv Kehler always
has a story to tell. Irv has been a member of Boze’s for a
couple of years now, and I’ll bet he’s shared at least
one story each and every time he’s worked out at Boze’s.
There is never a dull moment when Irv is around, as his enthusiasm
for sharing a good yarn is becoming legendary. Irv joined Boze’s
upon the encouragement of his son Brian, who is a former Boze’s
employee. Ever since then Irv has been a regular morning member
(can’t miss coffee with the boys), eager to share some dialogue.
Irv isn’t just talk, he’s also filled with action. Irv
regularly hits the weights at Boze’s, and supplements his
training with extra-curricular activities that include biking,
walking and skiing. Yup, Irv is a downhill demon, regularly hitting
the slopes at Asessippi during the winter, and usually heading
further west for the bigger slopes of the Rockies every spring.
Irv loves the outdoors, and spends quite a lot of his summer
at the cottage. He’s been retired for a couple of years, but
rarely has any “idle
time”. If he’s not involved with home fix-up chores
he’s building something for Brian or helping his wife with
her passion for crafts. Irv Kehler is a pleasure to have around
Boze’s. He’s always got a story to share, so if you’ve
got a free moment strike up a conversation, you’ll be glad
you did.
Jane Delange is probably more surprised than anyone
to learn she is October’s
member of the month. Jane may be characterized as a reserved
sort of person, but her “over the top” enthusiasm during
this past summer’s marathon training - and her recent completion
of the Regina Marathon (she ran the half-marathon distance) -
tipped the scales in her favour and earned her the nod. Jane
might be considered a bit of an “on again – off again” type
of member at Boze’s. She’s had numerous memberships,
alternating consistent stretches of working out with periods
of “sporadic” training
schedules. She’s regularly active, as she walks faithfully,
however she sometimes found it difficult to stick with a training
program. Well, it appears she’s found her focus in running.
Jane has been the inspiration for a group of dedicated athletes
(including Boze’s instructors Wendy De la Mare and Patti Beaudin)
who set a goal to participate in this year’s Regina Marathon.
The group faithfully completed many early morning runs this past
summer – dealing with the extreme heat and increasing training
distances partly by channelling Jane’s enthusiasm into their
workouts. A member of the group indicated Jane “was the glue
that held us together”. “Her enthusiasm for training
and the run itself were enough to keep me and everyone else motivated.” Jane
displayed a commitment to running, and the group, that obviously
has left it’s mark. Jane Delange, our “on again – off
again” member is ON because of her commitment and dedication
to training for the marathon. Congrats Jane. You’re a great
example of what a bit of focus can do – for yourself and others.
There is a very good reason Dean Yerama is our
member of the month. He was once again the star attraction at the
Tyzen fund-raiser, and since he worked so hard on stage (and missed
the show. . .again) he deserves to finally get the nod as Boze’s Member-of-the-Month.
Dean has been a member at Boze’s for a couple of years. He
took a short hiatus last year, but returned this fall to “pick
up where he left off”. Dean is an accomplished athlete, and
excels at slowpitch, playing a mean short-stop for the perennial
league powerhouse Brewmeisters. He is the longest hitter on the
team, and can attribute some of his strength to his Boze’s
workouts. Dean works hard on the weights, and although he’s
not a great fan of cardio conditioning, he worked up a sweat
at Tyzen. Dean was easily the most animated and enthusiastic “cast
member” on the stage. He wowed the crowd with his hilarious
sketches, particularly his “thumbs in the ears” malady.
If you missed the show you need to talk to Dean and ask him about
it. I’m sure he’d share a few thoughts with you. Dean’s
job with Hydro doesn’t quite allow him to maintain a regular
workout schedule, but when he’s around he certainly gives
Ralph and Les a run for their money. They have been known to
wait around for Dean, but when he shows, they know the workout
will be intense. Dean Yerama, a great act and Boze’s member-of-the
month for November. MOOOOO.
Jeff Michasiw might best be described
as a gentle giant – he’s a strong, silent type of fellow. Jeff is
a regular “Nooner”, that is, he works out during his
lunch break, although lately he has been dropping in after work
to complement his training. Jeff has been a Boze’s member
for more than six years, and has been particularly regular for
the last two. In fact, he’s been on a much more rigorous program
the last couple of months, alternating daily between cardio and
weight training workouts. He usually trains with Boze’s staffer
Todd Gardipie, although Jeff would argue he’s been more regular
than Todd this fall. Sport is part of Jeff’s life. He’s
a stalwart member of the Dauphin Mavericks rugby club and has
a passion for “contact” sports (although his choice
of NFL football teams leaves something to be desired). Jeff isn’t
actively aggressive by nature, and is known as more of a “peace-maker” than
a “trouble-maker” on the rugby pitch. Be advised however,
that Jeff has been known to “put a hurt on” the opposition
when the opportunity presents itself. Jeff has focussed his workouts
this fall, trying to get more out of the time spent in the gym.
He and Todd are into a more regular, intensive, yet streamlined
program that alternates work-out days. To enhance his training
Jeff has also tried to clean up his eating and sleeping habits.
So far, so good, according to Jeff, as he has recognized significant
improvements this fall. Jeff Michasiw, Boze’s member of the
month for December.
