You’ll probably never meet a nicer
guy at Boze’s than Jerry Miller. Jerry is a Boze’s regular,
who, like clock-work, hits the gym after his teaching day at Mackenzie
School is over. Jerry teaches woodworking - and I view him as a
bit of an anomaly - he still has all his fingers! (How many carpenters
or shop teachers do you know who have all ten fingers intact?) Jerry
has been a Boze’s member since 1993 - and even though he can’t
remember his membership number, credits his current state of personal
well-being to a regular combination of weight training and cardio
workouts. Jerry seems to “own” the elliptical trainer
- the one with the book rest - where he can be found reading the
latest edition of Sports Illustrated - back page first. (Any SI
junkie knows you have to read Rick Reilly’s column before
looking at anything else.) Jerry is a die-hard Minnesota Vikings
fan, and has been a bit down in the dumps about this year’s
team. He won’t fret though, as his passion for action fiction
books fills his time now that the Vike’s are out of the playoff
hunt. Jerry doesn’t say it out loud much , but thinks the
Bears look awfully good this year. Jerry credits strength training
and stretching with helping him recover from a recent shoulder injury
- one that was serious enough to require surgery - and says he has
never felt better physically. Next time you’re in the gym
and see Jerry get him to show you his fingers and ask him to tell
you a story. You won’t be disappointed by either the fingers
or the stories – but don’t linger on the elliptical
trainer if Jerry’s turn is up next. Jerry Miller is a deserving
Boze’s member of the month.
If you don’t know Perry Lamb, you’re in
for a treat when you meet him. Perry casts a large shadow, and “throws
around some pretty heavy iron”, but he enjoys carrying on
a conversation almost as much as working out at Boze’s. Perry
has been a Boze’s member for over five years, and is a regular
who is around both during mornings and evenings. You know when Perry
has a day off, because he’s in the Gym in the morning. His
hair is usually a bit of a mess then, but he’s true and dedicated
to his workouts. Work days usually mean Perry visits Boze’s
in the evening, but an interesting change in Perry’s life
has altered his workout schedule more than his job. Perry recently
tied the knot. Boze did a fair bit of kidding regarding who would “wear
the pants” in the new family, but Perry showed his mettle
by bringing his new bride Shawna to Boze’s to work out with
him. Shawna has also become a member and seems to be enjoying Boze’s
as much as Perry does. Perry routinely records his workouts in an
exercise diary - and is known to read extensively when doing treadmill
work. Perry is never without a comment or a quip, so introduce yourself
if you don’t know him and you’ll soon be swapping stories.
Perry Lamb, Boze’s member of the month for February, 2002.
Shirley and Richard Thompson believe in
physical activity. They have been members of Boze’s since the early days on Main Street
and realize the values and benefits associated with staying in good
physical condition. “I was a stroller mom” states Shirley. “I
love to walk and would put the kids in the stroller and head out.
Now I prefer walking indoors, especially when the weather is really
cold or hot”. Shirley is concerned about the onset of osteoporosis
and has incorporated weight bearing exercises into her regular exercise
routine. “I used to do a lot of aqua-cize classes but find
I get more benefits from working against gravity”. Shirley
has incorporated strength training into her program that also includes
plenty of walking. Richard believes exercise has helped him rehabilitate
a back problem. Richard used to play a lot of sports - but the pounding
associated with basketball and badminton combined with a job that
forced him to do a lot of sitting and driving combined to place
quite a strain on his back. He felt he needed to strengthen and
stretch, and found Boze’s to provide the right mix of rehabilitation
options. Richard now enjoys playing a lot of golf during the summer,
and hasn’t complained of any back trouble for over a year.
Shirley and Richard enjoy the social aspects of Boze’s and
have attended a number of specialty courses over the years. They
both believe exercise plays a preventative role in maintenance of
good health. Shirley sums up the value Boze’s provides by
stating “I never get up in the morning and don’t feel
like working out!”
Bruce McPhee is an original, a throwback, a Boze’s “first-timer”.
Bruce was one of the first people in Dauphin to recognize the value
of a Boze’s membership, as he purchased his initial membership
on September 6, 1985, Boze’s second day of operation. Other
than a couple of years off to get married and build a house Bruce
has been a steady Boze’s member. Bruce joined Boze’s
as a 22 year old hunk and immediately starting “throwing” the
heavy weights around. Although Bruce never indicated an aspiration
for bodybuilding he has predominately been a weights only guy. However,
from time to time he can be found on the cardio equipment burning
up the calories. Bruce works out regularly, and is known to keep
his beeper or cell phone close at hand when he’s on call.
Bruce is also an avid outdoorsman, and in addition to being regular
with his workouts Bruce regularly plays outdoors with his toys - “big
boy toys” like snowmobiles, trucks, boats, etc.... He changes
his toy collection as often as some of us change our socks, so if
you have an interest in big boy toys or the outdoors Bruce is the
guy to talk to. Bruce has seen a lot of people come and go through
Boze’s over the years, and has shared many a laugh and story
with them. Why not share a story with Bruce -- Next time you see
him in the gym ask him to bring you up to date on the newest toy
in his garage. He’ll happily oblige you.
Adeline Baker should be called
our “Reluctant” Member of the Month. When first approached
about being a member of the month Adeline gracefully declined,
stating there were other more deserving members. When asked again
a few months later, she declined -- again. And then again. Each
time Adeline declined she suggested someone else was more deserving.
Nothing could be further from the truth. Adeline has been a Boze’s
regular for many years, and during the past year or so has been “like
clockwork” with her workouts. Adeline has gradually increased
the intensity and duration of her workouts and is close to being
in the best shape of her life. In addition to working out with
cardio equipment Adeline is a regular in the weight room and a familiar
face in aerobics classes. She is particularly fond of the higher
intensity classes like Tai Boze. Adeline has three kids (all
grown up), although you couldn’t tell by looking at her. She
credits regular exercise with keeping her in top shape and the proper
frame of mind. Adeline Baker, our Reluctant Member of the Month
for May.
They’ve become known as Boze’s aerobic “book-ends”.
Terry Yates and Doug Deans are die-hard aerobics fan(atic)s who
have staked out their favourite spots in Noon classes. Doug and
Terry have been coming to Boze’s for longer than either is
willing to admit, and during that time have seen many aerobics
members come and go. Class formats, styles and instructors have
come and gone, but Terry and Doug have endured, When they are
in class, and that’s more often than not, Doug positions himself
to the left side of class, and Terry is routinely on the right.
This positioning doesn’t necessarily reflect their political
perspective, but does preclude the rest of the group to find
space somewhere in between. Doug and Terry are often helping out
with class set-up by positioning steps for tardy members during
Wednesday step classes. Terry and Doug are usually good for a joke,
story or anecdote and can often be found rushing out, still sweating
of course, for a quick lunch. It’s a routine that has been
around almost as long as Boze’s,
and Doug and Terry have become a fixture of the noon hour class.
Doug Deans and Terry Yates, Boze’s Bodyshop Members of the
Month for June, 2002.
Jim Nakonechny has been a Boze’s regular since
our early days on Main Street. Jim usually gets to Boze’s
immediately after his work day is complete, and has usually been
accompanied for the past few years by his son and workout partner
James. In the early years, Jim was the one who set the pace and
determined the tone of their workouts. However, during the last
year or so, as James has grown, he’s begun to push his Dad.
Jim, never one to back down from a challenge, has struggled at
times to keep pace, according to an anonymous Boze’s source.
In addition, the source has indicated Jim is “looking forward
to slowing down a bit” after James heads off to university
this fall. Regardless of the truth (or lack of) from our “source”,
Jim is a model of weight training consistency. He’s in the
weight room at least four times per week, and can always be counted
on for a funny story or joke. Jim always starts his workout with
a warm-up, and although he avoids the aerobics room like the
plague he works on his cardio conditioning almost as hard as
his weight training. Jim has had a few injuries over the years,
some probably due to his passion for heavy weights. However, he
adheres to proper lifting techniques and has added a bit of stretching
to his program in recent years. Jim’s a stickler for order,
and helps keep the weight room in good order when he’s working
out. From time to time he even reminds others to “put their
weights away”. As well as keeping the gym and his body in
good shape, Jim keeps his personal appearance in good shape as
well. He rarely has a hair out of place, even after a gruelling
workout. One final reminder about July’s member of the month
- he has a fondness for proper attire, particularly leather jackets.
If your jacket is extra-large you better keep your eyes on it. Jim
has been known to walk out of Boze’s after a workout with
the wrong jacket on - only to return when the keys in the pocket
don’t
fit his vehicle.
Charles Hill might best be described as our “Early Member”,
as he’s usually the first one here every Monday, Wednesday
and Friday morning. More often than not Charles beats us here
and is sitting in his car patiently waiting for Boze’s doors
to open. Charles has been a member for a number of years, and
has either passed along or picked up his workout ethic from his
son Tony, a Winnipeg Firefighter and recent Dauphin Strongman Competitor.
Likewise Charles has a daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter
who work out at Boze’s. Charles has a systematic routine when
he works out, which combines cardiovascular and resistance training.
He starts his workout with a brisk walk (always on Treadmill
#1) and continues into the weight room for an overall body workout.
Charles uses machines and free weights, and usually has a pretty
good sweat going before he’s ready to leave. Charles is usually
a pretty quiet fellow, but will bend your ear about his golf
game. (I don’t know
if it’s true, but a reliable source has told Boze’s
that since Charles has been working out he’s hitting the ball
10 yards further - into the bush). Regardless of the validity
of our source, Charles enjoys golf with the same type of zeal
as his workouts. Charles “Chuck” Hill, a great physical
activity role model and Boze’s member of the month for August.
Jackie Goran has been a Boze’s member for only two years, but her commitment
to working out was the characteristic we recognized when deciding
to make her our September, 2002 Member of the Month. Jackie is
serious about her workouts, and has become very confident in knowing
what she wants to accomplish in the gym. That wasn’t always
the case for Jackie, as we recently found out. Jackie has indicated
that she originally was reluctant to join Boze’s. “I
wasn’t sure I’d feel comfortable working out around
men. I wasn’t sure about what I should do, and this made me
feel uneasy. In the beginning I participated in more group classes
than working out in the weight room”. After some time she
began to feel better about herself in the weight room, but really
noticed a change after having a meeting with Boze to discuss
and update her program. “I found out a number of different
ways to do certain exercises. I modified my program and have
seen positive results.” Jackie’s meeting with Boze
opened her eyes to different techniques with the equipment, and
allowed her to modify her workout to better suit her goals, and
her time limits. Jackie usually works out on her lunch break, and
often times will return after work to finish cardio or attend a
class. Getting exercise technique information and the resultant
change in her program has made her more confident in the gym. Jackie
stated her increased confident in the weight means she doesn’t
really notice who else might be working out. “I’m usually
on a pretty tight schedule, so I have little time for anything more
than doing my exercises and getting back to work.” Jackie
still participates in group classes, and particularly enjoys up-tempo
classes like Tai Boze. Jackie Goran, September 2002 Member of
the Month.
Bernice has been a Boze’s member since day one ...
That’s
correct, Bernice filled out her first set of membership papers
on September 5, 1985. However, at that time her last name wasn’t
Boyechko (she was still single) and she was 18 years younger
(We’ll
let you do the math.) Bernice tricked us a bit, because over
the years she took the odd short break from working out. Those
breaks resulted in her receiving a couple of different membership
numbers upon renewal. It was only through some diligent detective
work that we found her original membership forms and determined
she was a deserving member of the month. Bernice participates in
many of our classes, and over the years has probably attended as
many group classes as anyone at Boze’s. But Bernice doesn’t
just limit herself to group classes – she has done her fair
share of working out in the weight room, and currently spends a
considerable amount of time on our cardio equipment. Bernice leads
a very active lifestyle, and is involved in numerous “outside” interests
beyond her work and family life. She is constantly on the go,
but has made time to include workouts and exercise in her routine.
That’s
probably why she barely looks any different than she did on September
5, 1995 when she first walked through our doors.
Karla has been a Boze’s
member since 1991. During that time she has developed a number
of training routines that combine cardiovascular and weight training
components. Throughout that time, however one thing has been
constant – her
devotion to physical activity. Karla is known to Boze’s staff
as a quiet, unassuming member who rarely says more than a pleasant
hello as she enters the facility. In more instances than not,
Karla comes in with a magazine (or two) she wishes to read while
she does her cardio. She’ll often times purchase a water and
then get on one of the pieces of cardio equipment and go hard.
On her weight training days she’ll then hit the machines – and
most times, we won’t even know she’s here. Although
she is usually efficient and quiet with her workouts, the intensity
she puts into her workouts is anything but easy. Karla pushes
herself to stay in top shape, and has made exercise an important
part of her life. Karla has participated in many of the special
contests Boze’s has offered over the years, and was fortunate
enough to win a one-year membership a couple of years ago during
one of our major promotions. Karla has become a Boze’s regular,
and is deserving of Member of the Month status.
Harold is quite a guy. He’s
been a member at Boze’s for only a couple of years, but during
that time has endeared himself to staff and other members in
a variety of ways. For instance, Harold is a notorious candy
fiend. The candy jar is the first place he goes when he gets
to Boze’s,
and you can be assured it’s the last place he stops before
leaving. However, a couple of months ago when the jar was nearly
empty Harold took it upon himself to bring a big bag of candy
in and fill it up. Harold is currently participating in a special
workout program that Boze helped him design. It’s a comprehensive
plan that includes regular doses of cardio and weight training.
Harold keeps hitting the gym with conviction, and has noticed
improvements over the past couple of months. Although Harold’s
knees aren’t
quite what they used to be, he’s still pounding away on the
climber, elliptical and treadmill - soothing his knees with candy.
Harold is a great guy to have around the gym, as you can tell
from the smiles on peoples’ faces when he’s around.
He’s
brought in his sons to train with him, and although they don’t
seem to eat as much candy as Harold, they too are serious about
working out. Harold Aitken is a deserving Member-of-the-Month.
