GETTING MOTIVATED IS EASY, STAYING
MOTIVATED IS HARD! How do you motivate yourself to
maintain a physically active lifestyle? Try some of these ideas
to get yourself on the right track:
Overcome your distractions
- remind yourself how important workouts are to you. Schedule
your workouts like you would an appointment with a good friend –
You wouldn't stand up a friend, would you?
Examine how your body feels
- are you feeling fatigued, stiff, tense, lethargic, or
restless? Learn to listen to your body and give it the type and
amount of activity it needs. When you're tired, ease up on your
workout – and when you feel energetic, try something different!
Visualize your achievement
- imagine how good you will feel after fulfilling your workout
commitment. If you're like most of us, you'll feel great when
you're done (although you might not feel that way at the
beginning.)
Choose activities you like
- if you aren't getting enjoyment from your present workout you
may need to look for exercises that better matches your
personality and interests. If you've been spending a lot of time
on the cardio equipment you might want to try a weight training
program.
Wake up your routine - try
a new kind of workout or change the sequence or frequency of
your exercises (try circuits, interval training, etc...)
Compromise your approach -
if you've been doing "the same old same old" why not change your
approach? Treat yourself like an athlete and get Boze's to
design a year-long training program that is full of variety.
Recommit your goals -
remind yourself that positive habits are created one choice, one
moment at a time. You won't get in shape overnight, but each day
is another step in the right direction. When you feel like
you're not making progress reflect on your first workout –
compare what you do now to what you did then – you'll likely
realize how far you've come.
Reinforce your exercise values
- spend 20 minutes writing down the reasons why staying active
is important to you and why you can't quit now. Choose to stay
active because you want to, not because you have to.
