It’s Fall . . . time to get serious again about looking
after yourself. It’s a busy time no doubt, but if you don’t
look after yourself, who is going to?
Looking after your personal health is likely one of your
top priorities, however it probably gets "lost in the
shuffle" as you balance your priorities.
Increasing physically activity is
scientifically proven to reduce health risks. In fact,
decreasing sedentary living by increasing physical activity can
have equal or greater health benefits than quitting smoking.
So what’s keeping you from getting a little
more exercise? If you are like most Canadians, the biggest
barrier to being more active is a perceived lack of time. But
how much time do you really need to make a difference in your
health?
According to research done by Health Canada
and the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiologists, Canadians
need to "accumulate at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity
physical activity most, preferably all days of the week".
The research clearly indicates that long
bouts of sustained physical activity aren’t necessary to improve
health. In fact, research suggests the optimal amount of
physical activity needed to attain maximum health benefits is
far less than most people believe. And, benefits can be achieved
through participating in "short chunks of time" as opposed to
all at once.
Most people think "more is better", yet if
you were able to spend the equivalent amount of time being
active that the average Canadian spends taking coffee breaks
(about 30 minutes per day) you would dramatically increase your
level of health.
